Susan Sung Lyeh Joe Obituary
Born December 30, 1929, Korea - Departed October 27, 2022, California
Susan Sung Joe was born in December of 1929, in Korea. She grew up during the Japanese occupation and survived the Korean war, both enduring and prevailing through many hardships. Susan attended Ewha Womans University, gaining a degree in music, specifically piano and after graduating she played at Sunday services on the US army base, eighth division.
In 1960, at age twenty-nine, she immigrated to the United States with plans to go to New York to spend a summer at the Word of Life Inn, at Schroon Lake. However, after arriving in Los Angeles she never made it there, it seemed God had other plans for her. She remained in Los Angeles, and was introduced to Harvey Joe, an adventurous outdoorsman.
In 1961 she and Harvey were married at the Korean United Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles and had two children, Harry and Diane.
She raised and cared for her family well, always providing home cooked meals, both Korean and American dishes, making sure everyone had plenty to eat. She would always say, “Eat and eat more”.
She was active in her children’s education, taking them to swim lessons, science camps, art lessons, different sports and more, giving them every opportunity and always encouraging them to try new things.
She developed a great love of the outdoors and camping from Harvey, taking many wonderful trips with her family and friends.
She also loved working in her garden, growing a variety of vegetables and flowers, her favorites being cosmos, chrysanthemums and roses. Always at odds with the weeds, she tended to her garden on a daily basis.
At the age of 92, in October, at Harry’s home, Susan peacefully departed into the care of the Lord. She had spent a peaceful day listening to classical music and even though she appeared to be sleeping she tapped her toes as if she were playing the pedals of a piano.
It was a delight to watch.
She will always be remembered for her care, determination, endurance and wisdom.
She will be missed by the many who knew and loved her; her family, her friends and her neighbors.
