Our beloved father and grandfather, Sang Mu Lee, passed away the evening of November 1st, 2023. His journey on this earth came to a peaceful end as he departed for his eternal home in Heaven. Sang Lee loved and served the Lord all his life, finding comfort in his final moments through that love and faith.
Early Life
Sang Mu Lee was born on November 4th, 1932, in the city of Shin-woo-Joo, Korea, to his parents, Gi-Hwan Lee and Tea-Oak Lee. He was the third youngest of four children: an older brother and sister and a younger brother, Rev. Sang Hyun Lee, who currently resides in Southern California.
His mother, Tea-Oak Lee, found faith at a young age through an American missionary at her school in Korea. She devoted her life to spreading the Gospel, and her entire family embraced the faith through her testimony. They worshiped and served at the 2nd Chosun Christian Presbyterian Church in Shin-Woo-Joo.
During Sang’s childhood, World War II had begun, and Japan started their occupation of Korea. This was a difficult time for all Koreans who had to endure severe oppression, which included the capture of Korean Christians who were forced to apostatize their faith. Sang’s mother, Tea-Oak Lee, was one of those captured and ordered to bow to a Shinto shrine, which she refused despite enduring severe torture and abuse. Tea-Oak Lee was finally sent home only to change out of her blood-stained clothes, as per Japanese practices, before she was to be executed the next morning. That night, his mother gathered Sang (age 7) and the entire family and fled to Manchuria, China in 1939. Although life in Manchuria was also difficult, they resided there until the war ended, returning to Seoul, Korea in 1948.
Marriage
Sang married his beloved wife and best friend, Bok-Soo Lee, in 1954. He fell in love with Bok-Soo at first sight in their small village in Korea. From that initial meeting until her death in 2005, they shared a profoundly touching marriage. In her lifetime, he would often call out to her as "My love, Boksoo!" and even until the end of his life, he expressed the same affection and desire to be with her. It is a comfort to his family to know they are reunited in heaven.
Mid/Later Life
In Korea, Sang worked in USA Army Base in Soul Korea, where became fluent in English and worked as a translator and a manager of construction team. He later worked at Po-Hang Construction Corporations.
Sang, Bok-Soo, and their three children moved from Seoul, Korea to the US in the mid-1970s. He started and ran a commercial painting company for over 30 years, working hard to provide a supportive workplace for his employees and to provide for his family. He became regarded for his work ethic and professionalism.
Sang also led and established a church for his small community in Orange County. As the church congregation grew, they established the Reformed (Jae-Gun) Presbyterian Church in LA (1978). He was appointed to serve as an Elder to help build the church, which he enjoyed and cherished as one of the most meaningful aspects of his life. He later helped establish churches in San Jose and New York, wholeheartedly serving with humility and reverence to God.
In his old age, Sang continued to prioritize his service and daily worship of God.
In Memory
Sang Lee was a family man who deeply loved his children and grandchildren. He will be remembered for his labors of love, such as the delicious full American breakfasts he cooked every Sunday before church. Despite not having a carefree childhood, his grandchildren will remember how playful and good-humored he was, always ready with a big hug or a word of encouragement.
In grief and gratitude, Sang’s family, who loved and respected him, will find peace in knowing his passing is a homecoming to the Lord he loved so dearly and to the wife he cherished.
