Roderick Myron Childs Sr. was born on October 8th, 1960, in Los Angeles, California to the loving parents Jimmy Joe Sr. and Geraldine (Geri) Childs. On July 31st, 2025, at the age of 64, Roderick passed away peacefully in his sleep and went home to be with the Lord.
Roderick was raised in La Puente, California, where he was active in sports from an early age. He excelled in baseball, basketball, and football, eventually becoming a varsity football player for the La Puente Warriors. After graduating high school in 1978, he attended Mount San Antonio College and continued his football journey. In 1980, Roderick earned a scholarship to play football at Idaho State University (ISU). His outstanding athleticism and leadership helped the ISU Bengals secure the National Championship title in 1981. In recognition of his exceptional performance, Roderick was inducted into the Idaho State University Hall of Fame in 2015.
Following his successful athletic career, Roderick dedicated over 30 years of service as a respected Juvenile Detention Officer and Supervisor. He worked in facilities across Downey, Los Angeles, and Sylmar, California, becoming a role model to many and making a meaningful impact on the lives of countless youth.
Roderick was married to Paula Mitchell for 18 years. From their union came their beloved son, Roderick Childs Jr., whom Roderick cherished above all else. Though Roderick and Paula later divorced, they remained committed co-parents and raised their son with love, unity, and respect. His bond with “Rod Jr.” brought Roderick immense pride and joy throughout his life.
Known affectionately as a gentle giant, Roderick will be remembered for his kind heart, warm smile, and uplifting spirit. He had a gift for offering encouragement and light in any room he entered. A passionate sports fan, Roderick was devoted to his Dodgers, Lakers, and Raiders, faithfully cheering them on through every season. During his retirement years, Roderick discovered and started playing pickleball. Because he was naturally athletic, he became really good, really fast while touching the lives of others with his wonderful, kind and lovable spirit.
Roderick leaves behind a legacy of love, humility, and strength. He is survived by his mother, Geraldine (Geri); his father, Jimmy Joe Sr.; his brother, Jimmy Jr. (Alicia); his niece, Jessica Knolley (Brooks); and his grand-nephew, Denver. He is also survived by his former wife, Paula Mitchell; and his stepchildren, Jaason Love, Dwight Robinson, and Sherese Love. Roderick is lovingly remembered by a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends who were like family.
His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
