Mildred S Davis

Mildred Sheloma Davis, known affectionately to all as Nano, certainly lived well. With her big heart, witty personality, and boundless capacity for both optimism and gratitude, she not only created a fulfilling existence for herself, but reminded those within her orbit to do the same.

Born on April 25, 1931, as the youngest of the children born to Bolden and Bertha Hines, Mildred grew up in Los Angeles surrounded by the love of her family, extended relatives, and members of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church community. It was there that Mildred began her life-long relationship with the Lord. Eventually she became an active member herself, joining the choir and developing connections that would last a lifetime.

A proud Angelino since birth, Mildred attended schools in the Los Angeles area including Virgil Middle School, Belmont High School and Los Angeles City College. She studied at Cal State LA and received her Bachelor’s of Science degree in education; which she used during her impressive decades-long career as a beloved teacher in Los Angeles Unified School District.

When asked, Nano would assuredly say that she was “born married”, referring to her marriage to the love of her life, Eugene Davis. The two met as teens and married on August 27, 1950 once Eugene returned from his Navy enlistment, and remained together for 61 years until Eugene’s passing in 2011. Mildred and Eugene had three sons: Eugene, William and Darryl whom they adored. They loved watching their boys play baseball or draw detailed comics or invent games together.

As a couple, Mildred and Eugene cultivated a network of friends and family by joining groups such as the Infinitudes, the Jolly Couples Club, and various bowling leagues. Nano was so good at bowling that her children and grandchildren often wondered exactly how it was possible that someone with such luxurious fingernails and a petite frame could pick up a boulder sized ball and throw strike after strike with effortless grace.

Mildred passed away peacefully in her home on February 21, after a lengthy illness. She battled her ailments defiantly with a tenacity that delighted her family and often surprised her doctors. She was lovingly cared for by her family, her nurses, Felicia and Mely, and especially her daughter-in-law, Lisa, who was at all times Nano’s advocate, companion, and best friend.

Nano’s absence has left a void. With her passing, the Laker franchise has lost its biggest fan, Las Vegas has lost its most glamorous slot player, and the showrunners of General Hospital have lost their most loyal viewer. But more importantly, we, her family and friends, have lost a light that illuminated us all.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, siblings: Eugene, Esther, Theodore, Alfred, Bertha, and Eleanor; her husband Eugene Davis and her son Eugene Davis Jr. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her beloved sons William and Darryl; daughters-in-law, Millie and Lisa (aka Quack #1 and Quack #2), grandchildren Erika (Matt), Brian Patrick, Jeffrey, Brian Anthony, Ashley, Derrick, and David; great-grandchildren: Tatian, Malana, Carsen, Chaunise, Brian Anthony Jr., Maximilian and Lillian; godchildren: Trina Dubose and Quentin Williams, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and friends.

A viewing will be held for Mildred S Davis on Thursday, March 16, 2023, from 9:00a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Rose Hills memorial Park, Sky Rose Chapel, 3888 Workman Mill Road, Whittier California 90601. Her funeral service will occur immediately afterward from 10:00a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Mildred will be laid to rest in Rose Hills Memorial Park, 3888 Workman Mill Rd, Whittier, California 90601; Mariposa Terrace; Gate: 1, Section: 6, Lot: 2231, Grave: 2.
