A Man of Many Voices
He lived with music in the air,
seven radios humming at once,
jazz pouring through the walls
like memory refusing to be quiet.
Each note told a story,
each rhythm a reminder
that life was meant to be felt.
He loved Black history deeply,
kept it close on a shelf of worn books—
a library he built with pride,
a place where I learned
that knowing where you come from
is how you know where you’re going.
He taught himself to read,
page by page, word by word,
proving that wisdom isn’t given—
it’s claimed.
And once he learned,
he never stopped learning,
never stopped listening.
For over sixty years,
he walked beside my grandma,
hand in hand through joy and struggle,
raising a family both near and far,
bound not just by blood
but by presence, persistence, and love.
He believed in family—
in crowded rooms,
in long conversations,
in road trips down southern highways
to Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama,
where roots run deep
and stories wait patiently to be told.
The TVs played, the radios sang,
the house stayed alive with sound—
just like him.
Even now, in the quiet,
we hear him.
In the music.
In the stories.
In us.
