

John R. Campbell passed away in Escondido from complications of cancer. He was born in Tonasket, WA, the son of Ben and Evelyn Campbell. The family moved to Whittier, CA when John was 7. He married his high school sweetheart after both graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo where John played in the band and was active in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Amateur Radio Club.
John is survived by his wife of 61 years, Anita, his children Keith (Cathi) Campbell of Escondido and Linda Campbell of Redondo Beach, grandchildren Jason (Krishele) Trueblood, Jerikah (Andrew) Cyr, and great grandchildren Alana, Makayla, and Bryson.
John was an Electrical Engineer working as a civilian for the Department of the Navy for 37 years, starting in Corona and then San Diego. During their 33 years in San Diego, John and Anita played hand bells at their church, traveled extensively in their motorhome, visited Europe, Asia, South America, and all 50 states, made frequent trips to Alberta, Canada, to spend time with family, and enjoyed cruising. John’s other favorite pastimes included Ham Radio, coaching his kids’ sports, building things for and supporting their school projects, backpacking, Cub Scouts and Indian Guides, genealogy research, and computers. After retirement, John and Anita moved to Escondido where they have lived for the last 19 years.
A memorial service for John will be held at Hope United Methodist Church in Rancho Bernardo at 1:00 on April 2, 2022. Graveside service and interment will be at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the San Diego Humane Society.
