Edwin Newton Smith

On February 13, 2022, Edwin Newton Smith passed away in his home in Lincoln, California where he was a resident for the past 14 years. He was born in South Gate, California to Newton Ault Smith and Conchoella Belle Gilmore Smith and grew up in South Gate, graduating from South Gate High School. He married Audrey Gordon in 1948 and lived in Huntington Park, California, moving to Whittier, California in 1954. He retired after working for Safeway for 35 years and moved to Trail, Oregon in 1985 where he and his wife built their dream log home in the Oregon forest. After Audrey’s death he started having heart issues and he moved in 2007 down to Lincoln Hills, California to be with his California family.

He leaves behind his daughter Pamela Harmon and husband Phil of Lincoln, California, his daughter Jana Locke-Smith of Trail, Oregon, his sister Mildred Dewert and husband Al of Cedaredge, Colorado and his sister-in-law Jackie Smith of Concord, California. He has five grandchildren: Kristen Worden and husband David of Rocklin, California, Steven Harmon and wife Meredith of San Jose, California, Alisha Gros and husband Chuck of Eagle Point, Oregon, Ryan Locke of Trail, Oregon, and Casey Stevie Harris of White City, Oregon. He has seven great grandchildren: Jacob Worden, James Gros, Tyler Worden, Samuel Worden, Isabel Gros, Keira Harmon, and Thacker Gros. He was preceded in death by his wife Audrey Smith, daughter Cheryl Smith, great grandson Preston Gros, and his brother Jack Smith.

He loved being with people his whole life and had many barbeques and celebrations that attested to that fact. The last 14 years, he enjoyed the Single’s Club and Monday Night Football Group in Sun City, Lincoln Hills and the ROMEO’s [Retired Old Men Eating Out] – they kept him young. He enjoyed creating things his whole life – woodworking, stained glass, wooden toys, and creating cartoon characters for his children and grandchildren. He built his dream log home - it took him a long time, but it was a labor of love - doing most of the work himself. He liked playing cards and ship cruising with his friends. He loved his Chickasaw Heritage, tracing his Indian line through the “Trail of Tears” to Oklahoma where his family settled. He and his positive attitude will be missed by all his family and friends. Celebration of Life happened Saturday, March 5,2022, Reverend Alan Hearl officiating, and interment will be at Rose Hills, Whittier, California to be with his wife and his daughter.
