Edward Lee Shapiro was born February 7, 1950 in Philadelphia, the youngest of three children to Evelyn and Joseph Shapiro. His childhood was filled with fond memories of stick ball with the neighborhood kids and double header Phillies games on weekends. He worked the family flooring business with his siblings and parents and appreciated the strength of family values and work ethics.
He graduated from Northeast Highschool in 1967 at 17-years-old. He then graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Penn State University in 1971. After college he was accepted into the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines, Iowa in 1972. Edward finished his residency training in Internal Medicine from the Chicago Osteopathic Medical Center in 1977. During this time, one of Ed’s colleagues set up a blind date with his soon to be wife, Ethel Viernes. They married in 1977 before moving to California. In 1980, Ed went into private practice where he opened a medical office in California and then in Arizona in 1993.
Ed was a man of deep conviction, strong opinions, vast intelligence and great humor. His life was filled with the pursuit of his passions – his love of medicine, travel, history, Penn State and anything related to Philadelphia sports teams. This year he got to watch his Eagles win the Superbowl and he celebrated his 75th birthday. In retirement he found great joy in keeping up with the latest medical advances, reading history and was an aquarist. He also developed a love for sewing sports memorabilia and creating costumes for his grandson and his friends. His devotion to his family and friends is what he cared about the most. Ed made an impact on many lives and will live in the hearts of all those that he loved and loved him.
Edward is survived by his wife Ethel, his children Jared and Ashlee, 3 grandchildren, his sister Cookie and extended family.
