Our family regrets to announce the loss of our beloved grandfather, Chong Sheng Lin, who passed away on October 31, 2024. He was a devoted family man, and had a strong sense of integrity, tempered by a kind and loving heart. Born in 1929 during the Japanese colonial rule of Taiwan, he was fluent in Japanese as well as Taiwanese and Mandarin, and would eventually be conversant in English as well. He was the second of 5 sons and had one sister. He pursued a scholastic path, earning degrees in Taiwan, as well as completing a doctoral program in economics at Osaka University in Japan. It was during this time he met his future wife, Shu Lee, also a Taiwanese graduate student living in Japan. They married shortly thereafter, and soon emigrated to the United States and settled in San Francisco in 1969. They went on to raise one son, and set roots in San Mateo County for the next 3 decades. He returned to Taiwan frequently over the 1980’s and 90’s to lecture at Tunghai University. Retired from teaching, Dr. Lin returned to the Bay Area before moving to Southern California where he and his wife would live his remaining years to follow his son and be closer to his family. He particularly enjoyed singing Japanese Enka karaoke and gardening. He is survived by his wife, son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren, Samantha and Brendan.
