Mother Dorothy Smith and Father Preston Love Sr. from Omaha NE.
She grew up in Chicago IL and Washington DC, raised by her Aunt and Grandmother.
She was a funny but tough kid who studied boxing at the Joe Louis Boxing Center in
Chicago. Something she was very proud of and boasted of often. She had a good life in
Chicago before moving to Washington after her Aunt’s passing. She continued to thrive
after moving to Washington with her Grandmother.
She Graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Washington, DC in June 1956.
Beverly attended DC Teachers College (now, University of the District of Columbia)
and graduated in June, 1960, majoring in Chemistry and Math.
She taught Math and Science at Taft and Bertie Backus Jr High Schools in DC.
After spending vacation in Los Angeles summer of 1961, she came home and
announced that she wanted to move there. She moved to Los Angeles in 1962. The rest
is history! Beverly continued her teaching career in Los Angeles at Horace Mann Jr.
High, Brentwood Jr. High and then Crenshaw High school where she would retire from.
She also taught summer school in the Valley a few years.
She also worked with Professor Hildreth (Hal) Walker and his wife, Dr. Bettye Davis
Walker at their A-MAN, Inc. STEM International Science Center. She enjoyed her time with
the program there. Beverly retired with over 40 years in the teaching profession, and a
wonderful teacher she was. Her students Loved and Respected her. One of her most
famous being baseball legend Darryl Strawberry.
Beverly loved dabbing in politics, especially on the local level. She was a stalwart in the
neighborhood and on the Community Police Advisory Board. This was probably
because of her strong self-esteem, beautiful spirit, commitment and honesty. Nothing
wishy-washy about Bev. She let you know her stand on any subject.
Beverly was an avid golfer and would volunteer at major tournaments in the DC area. She
was always at the Lee Elder Tournament and she was able to play with a lot of the
celebrities in LA that she would meet there.
She loved her pets. Her two buddies preceded her in death: Lady and Joycie. “They were
the best kept pups in town”. After Joycie’s death. Bev was never quite the same. They
were an intricate part of her life. They were definitely her beloved companions. Upon
losing them, irreplaceable, emotional nourishment was lost. Bev was a tough Lady and
She gave Life a Great Fight like in the Gym. She is survived by Her Brothers, Sister, a
host of Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, friends and 40 years worth of Students.
I would like to personally Thank Olivia, Janice, Joanie, Ms Hines for their unwavering
support with her outings and her caregivers I employed to make her final years
comfortable.
Beverly has been a Wonderful Sister and an integral part of my life. She was one of a kind
and I will miss her dearly till my ending chapter.
Until we meet on the other side, I love you, So, So Much.
Your Brother, Richie.
