

Faye loved church and school. She accepted Christ at Shady Grove Baptist Church at the age of 12. She sang in the choir, played the piano, and served on the usher board. At Center Street Elementary School, she was known for having perfect attendance and exhibited academic excellence by skipping three grades. After attending Ullman High School, Faye moved to California. She obtained her AA degree from Harbor City College. When her brother, Fritz Sullivan, moved to California in 1969, she mentored him as he completed his AA from West LA College and his BA at Pepperdine. Faye always wanted to help others and loved celebrating the accomplishments of her loved ones.
Faye was introduced to the love of her life, Robert “Pee Wee” Mathis, Jr. by her friend Betty Hill. They married on June 18, 1971 in Las Vegas, Nevada. They created a loving home in Compton, California in which they raised their two children. Faye worked so hard to provide for her kids and always put their needs first.
Betty Faye worked as a payroll clerk for Pacific Bell and retired after 35 years. She was known for being selfless, detail-oriented, diligent, and responsible while being kind, loving, and funny. Faye loved spending time with family and playing slots in Las Vegas. Her genuine heart and loving spirit will be truly missed.
Betty Faye Mathis was called to Heaven on Sunday, February 5, 2023. She is survived by her children, Minita and Robert Lee Mathis III; her loving brother, Fritz James Sullivan; her amazing granddaughters, Mikayla and Madysen and their mom Crystal; her nephew, Glendon; her aunts and uncles, Lois Craig, Louise Macon, Mary Jean Barker, Bettie Matthews, Annie Coleman Butler, Sylvester Barker, Clifton Barker, and Donald Barker; her cousins, The Perkins family (Johnnie Jr. and Desi), The Sanders family (Dorothy, Ray, Samuel E., Samuel III), Vera Fincher, William Harris, The Todd family (Barbara, Brian, Venita, Demond, Breanna, Tyler, Mia),Trina, Jolene; family friends, The Thompson family (Patricia, Joseph, Denise, Karen, Pamela); Robert, Joey, Peyton; Betty “Bea” Williams Hill; The Mosby family (Allean, Lois W., Tony, Danielle, Jacque), Dolores Stevenson.
She is preceded in death by her husband Robert Mathis Jr.; her aunts and uncles Cleophus Barker, Lizzie Perkins, Juanita Barker, Clarence Barker and Sidney Barker; her sister in law Dale Sullivan and her niece Twila Scott; Edward “Sonny Boy” Fincher, her cousins James, Cassandra, and Michael Todd; and family friends Mackenzie Green and Will Stevenson. Betty Faye also leaves a host of beloved relatives and friends.
