An Nguyen Coleman, age 85, of Glendale, California passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2025. An was born in Saigon, Vietnam on May 30, 1939 to Tuoi Van Nguyen and Tam Thi Ly, An was their only child. An attended high school and university in Saigon, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree. In March 1966 An married Ngoc Huong Le. While living in Vietnam they had 3 children, Bao Kim, Bao Anh and Bao Uyen.
An had a successful career as a singer and actor in Vietnam, where he starred in many films, television shows, plays and concerts. As the war in Vietnam escalated An served as an interpreter. Being fluent in Vietnamese, English and French, An became a valuable asset to the American and South Vietnamese Militaries. When America’s war effort began to fail in 1975, An was forced to flee his home country with his wife and 3 children during the fall of Saigon. A harrowing journey followed with An and his family barely escaping as America withdrew and Saigon was taken by the northern army. An and his family were transported by military ship to Guam where they remained for a short time. An was quickly hired by Overseas National Airways which allowed the family to immigrate to New York where they were welcomed by an American family, The Colemans, who took them in and assisted them with housing, schooling and assimilation into their new country. An was very appreciative of the kindness and support from the Colemans and adopted the Coleman name as his own.
In 1980 An moved the family to California for fairer weather and job opportunities. The family settled in Glendale, California where An eventually began a career as a Social Worker for the County of Los Angeles, where he worked for 26 years until he retired. In 1982 An and his wife welcomed their 4th child, Bao Khoi.
In America, An continued his love of acting where he was in many movies and TV shows, including Rambo: First Blood Part II, Rules of Engagement with Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L Jackson, The Hanoi Hilton, Tour of Duty and was also the voice of Mr. Hyunh, the neighbor on Nickelodeon’s animated series ‘Hey Arnold!’
