Bill was born in Vallejo, California, in 1941. He was the first of 7 siblings born to William Joseph ("Joe") and Frances Hughes. The family moved to Southern California a few years after, where Bill spent his youth in the family home in Venice. He was proud to be a part of the second graduating class of Saint John Vianney High School in Los Angeles (1957). He attended classes at Chapman University, before beginning his executive/management career.
Bill's career path began as a Route Sales Driver for 7 Up Bottling Co of Los Angeles. After several promotions during his 20-years of service there (including Manager of the Fountain/Vending Division), he next transitioned to the Movie Theatre industry. He ultimately retired as Vice President of Planning and Development after 18 years with Metropolitan Theatres.
When he and his wife moved to their dream destination of Kailua-Kona in 2004, Bill started a 20-year third career of "retirement." He enjoyed this retirement with many volunteer positions in community and charitable groups. He was a charter member of the Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise (Simi Valley, CA), and he most recently served as a Board Member of the Big Island - Hawaii - Porsche Club of America.
For relaxation, Bill would enjoy taking his sailboat out of Oxnard Harbor for weekend cruises. In addition, he loved to golf and to drive his Porsche around the Big Island.
Family was Bill's #1 priority. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Darlene (McGinn); his son Christopher (Patti)- Bulverde, TX; and his daughter Carrie McKnight (Chris) - Boise, ID. Bill leaves behind four beloved grandchildren -- Jenna Carlson (Andy); Jessica Hughes ; Michael Hughes; and Bailey McKnight. He was also very blessed with his two great-granddaughters - Emma and Lily Carlson.
Bill is also survived by his sister, Margaret - Venice, CA; his brothers Timothy (Marge) - Palm Desert, CA; Patrick - Goldfield, NV; James (Susan) - Venice, CA; Michael (Carole) - Oakhurst, CA; and Kevin - Venice, CA., as well as many nieces and nephews.
Bill was always there for family and friends with his wisdom, his sense of fairness, sense of humor, and his ever-welcoming smile.
Services and Interment will be at Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, California, on January 6, 2024. A Celebration of Life will follow thereafter.
