Rosa Elizabeth Hallick

Rosa Elizabeth Hallick, age 99, died peacefullyat her home onDecember 7, after a short boutwithpneumonia. She was born March 8, 1915 in Havensville, Kansas, the third child of Edward and Cora Coates. Rosa was a resident of Palos Verdes Estates for the past 62 years. Following high school, she attended Kansas State Teachers College and Kansas State college where she obtained her teaching certificate. She taught school in Kansas from 1933-1940. During a trip to visit her uncle in California in 1940, she met and soon married John Hallick, her husband of 52 years, until his death in 1992. While raising three children, Rosa returned to school, earning a BA from Long Beach State in 1964, and began a 17-year career teaching at Silver Spur Elementary School. She continued her education, earning a Master of Science degree in Early Childhood Educationin 1975 from Pepperdine University, at the age of 60. Following “retirement”, she continued as a substitute teacherin the Palos Verdes Unified School Districtuntil age 80. Rosa has been a member of The Neighborhood Church since 1952, and was an active volunteeras co-chair of the Memorial Committee for many years,in the Yule Parlor Parade and other church activities. Rosa and John loved to travel together, visiting every continent except Antarctica, and more than 40 countries together. After John’s death, Rosa continued to travel with her children, who took her to the Nile, Russia, Alaska, Tahiti, the Mediterranean, Mexico, the Grand Canyon, and the Caribbean. Rosa learned to play the piano at an early age, became an excellent pianist, and played as an accompanist throughout her teaching career. She also learned to sew as a child, and continued this hobby for many years. Rosa is survived by her brother, Glenn E. Coates, her three children, Jan Cofer (Tom), Richard (Margaret West), and Vicky Ferrari (John), four grandchildren, John Hughes, Deborah Mundorff, and Jessica and Daniel Robbins, two great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. Beside her husband, Rosa was predeceased by sister Lenore Bell, brother Chesley Coates, and grandsons Matthew and Christopher Hallick. Rosa will be remembered for her soft-spoken warmth, grace, good humor, and ability to connect with others, and will be deeply missed by all who loved her. A celebration of Rosa’s life well be held at The Neighborhood Church in Palos Verdes Estates on January 12 at 11:00 am.
