It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Neil Bernard Poole, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, and public servant, on December 27, 2024. Born on June 12, 1946, to Doris and Trafford Poole, Neil lived a life defined by dedication, courage, and an unwavering love for his family and country.
Neil proudly served in the United States Army as a Sergeant during one of the most pivotal moments in American history. As a Combat Engineer stationed in Dak To, Vietnam, during the Tet Offensive in 1968, he displayed exceptional bravery and skill. He was also one of the Army’s respected Drill Instructors, shaping the next generation of soldiers with discipline and integrity. His service was marked by numerous commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Marksman Badge with M-14 qualification. He completed his military service honorably in 1969 after transferring to the USAR Control Group.
After his time in the Army, Neil embarked on a 37-year career with the Huntington Park Public Works Department. Starting as an electrician, he quickly rose to become the Director of Field Services, where his leadership and dedication made a profound impact on the community he served. He retired in 2008, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and selfless service.
Neil was known for his strong work ethic, resourcefulness, and a knack for fixing anything he set his mind to. A true handyman at heart, he often took on projects just for the joy of it. He also had a lifelong love of muscle cars, spending countless hours tinkering with and admiring them. More than anything, Neil cherished his role as a devoted family man. He shared 45 beautiful years with his beloved wife, Tonya Poole, whose unwavering partnership brought him immense joy and strength throughout his life. Together, they built a home filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Neil is survived by his wife, Tonya, and their children: Jennifer, Neil, Christine, and Natalie. He was a proud grandfather to his four grandchildren: Cynthia, Cecilia, Emily, and Zoe, and great-grandfather to Milana and Mayan. His courage, kindness, and steadfast devotion to his loved ones will continue to inspire all who knew him.
