Michael Howard Scott, 80, passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 1, 2024, after a period of declining health. Mike was born on July 6th, 1943 in New York City, the 2nd of 6 children to Francis and Dorothy (Howard) Scott. Mike grew up in New York City and Ridgewood, NJ.
Mike enlisted in the Marine Corps and spent a year in Iwakuni Japan. After that, he was stationed in San Diego, when he met the love of his life, Marsha Thalman.They married on May 9th, 1965 and lived in Pasadena before settling in Whittier. Mike and Marsha proudly raised two boys, Gregory and Daniel.
Mike had a long and successful career with numerous credit unions and ended his career as president of the United Parcel Credit Union. Always upright and fair, he was highly respected in the Credit Union industry and served as a mentor to many. He continued on as a member of the Board of Directors for the United Parcel Credit Union after his retirement.
Always a family man, Mike devoted himself to his boys and grandchildren. You could count on his presence at soccer games, dance recitals, track meets or whatever activity brought him close to his family.
Mike had a real passion for fishing and traveled throughout the country to cast a line from Alaska to Massachusetts. Mike enjoyed many memorable trips with his family. He especially enjoyed going back to Gloucester, MA, his mother’s birthplace. In his retirement, he used his woodworking skills to create toys for Woodworkers of Whittier.
Mike had the “right stuff” and was known as a loving, fair and generous husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be sorely missed by all.
Mike is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marsha (Thalman), his sons, Gregory of Turlock, CA and Daniel (wife Rosie) and 2 special grandchildren: Kayla and Nicolas all of La Habra Heights, He also leaves behind 2 sisters, Katherine Willwerth (David) of Gloucester, MA and Anne Miller of Savannah, GA and many nieces and nephews.
Mike was predeceased by his parents; brothers Timothy of Homer, AK and Christopher of Phoenix, AZ and his sister, Dr. Linda Scott of Port Angeles, WA.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 28, 2024 at 9:00 at Rose Hill Memorial Park, Memorial Chapel, 3888 Workman Mill Road, Whittier, CA 90601. Immediately following the memorial service, a reception will be in Rose Hills at GardenView Reception Center from 10:00am - 1:00pm. All are invited.
Michael will be laid to rest in Rose Hills Memorial Park, 3888 Workman Mill Rd, Whittier, California 90601; Mission SG Maus Niche Plaza; Gate: 1, Section: 1, Tier: C, Niche: 638.
