Marilyn Miller Randolph passed away peacefully on August 30, 2024, surrounded by loved ones at the Terraces at Park Marino in Pasadena, CA, after a lengthy illness. She was born in Los Angeles on August 11, 1941 to Lawrence “Reavis” and Hazel (Clark) Miller. She was raised in Huntington Park, and attended Huntington Park High School, where she graduated as salutatorian and held various leadership positions and received multiple awards, including the prestigious Phoenix Award for distinguished academic performance and community service. She was also active at First Methodist Church and was president of her youth group during her senior year.
She attended college at UCLA, graduating in 1963 with a bachelor’s degree in political science. She worked as an insurance claims adjuster and paralegal throughout her career and was valued for her intelligence, effectiveness at assisting injured workers, and meaningful relationships with her peers. In midlife, she earned a law degree from Southwestern Law School. She was also passionate about community service throughout her life. She was proudest of creating a program for children at the San Rafael Elementary School that introduced students to a wide variety of professions by having community professionals discuss their job duties and experiences. She was humbled and honored to be given the 2010 West Pasadena Residents’ Association Community Service Award for her efforts.
Marilyn had one son, John, and was blessed by a granddaughter, Kaia, in 2003. She also enjoyed her relationships with John’s wife, Jennifer, and her step-grandchildren, Margot, Joshua, and Sarah. She had many memorable times with her family, and had a particular fondness for reminiscing about a family trip to Crystal Cove State Park in Laguna Beach. She often spoke about her “sisters”—good friends Gloria and Merle—who remained close from high school days until the end of her life. In her later years, she lived at the Terraces at Park Marino, where she was adored and respected for her intelligence, quick wit, and spirited personality.
She is survived by her son, John Randolph, daughter-in-law, Jennifer Randolph, granddaughter, Kaia Randolph, niece, Julia Miller, and step-grandchildren, Margot Johnson, Joshua Ramirez, and Sarah Ramirez. She was predeceased by her brother, William Miller. A funeral service will be held in September at Rose Hills in Whittier. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made to the Pasadena Humane Society.
