Surrounded by her children, and on the Feast Day of the Lord’s Baptism in the early hours of January 8, 2023, Maria Bertha Caldera, 97 years of age, peacefully entered eternal life. The Whittier, CA resident was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother for many years, as well as a cherished and sought-after baby-sitter who helped many young mothers look after their newborns and toddlers during the 1970’s and 80’s.

Bertha was born on February 25, 1925 in Los Angeles, California but raised in Chihuahua, Mexico. Alongside her husband, Victor Manuel Caldera, who preceded her in death, they raised their family first in Los Angeles and then later in the City of Commerce.

She will be remembered for the no-nonsense and unwavering fashion by which she nurtured her husband and family - - with high expectation, an urgency to act quickly upon any golden opportunity that came her way or resolve to extinguish a troubling situation resourcefully, a healthy dose of discipline, plenty of encouragement and a deep faith that God would take care of any and all problems only if one prayed - faithfully. And let’s not forget love that was conveyed to extended family members and friends who meant the world to her.

Our mom was devoted to her family through thick and thin. It was only fitting that we, her children, reciprocate her good works and accompany her during her final weeks. We took care of her physically, emotionally and spiritually . . . to the end. And then, with a sense of thanksgiving and love, we released her to God.

Bertha is survived by her children, Manuel Caldera (and daughter-in-law, Vivian); Leticia Caldera; Lilia Caldera Rodriguez (and son-in-law, Jose Luis); Maria de Los Angeles Caldera; grandchildren: Stephen Caldera (and grand-daughter-in-law, Lena); Teresa Caldera Woodral (and grand son-in-law, Kevin), Graciela Guillen and Jonathan Rodriguez; Great-grandchildren: Ava Victoria Caldera, Madisyn Nicole and Juliet Woodral and Noah Manuel Guillen.
