Jar-Ling Huang (Carrie) 謝佳玲

Jar-ling “Carrie” Huang (謝佳玲) of La Mirada, California, passed away peacefully at home on July 20, 2026, her 78th birthday, surrounded by her family and by members of her Hsi Lai Temple community, who chanted by her side.

Carrie was born on July 20, 1948, in Taiwan, one of six children. She became a surgical nurse there, and in 1980 she and her husband, Samson, immigrated to the United States, where she started her life over. She learned English, took night classes while raising two children, and rebuilt her nursing career from the ground up, first as a Licensed Vocational Nurse at Alamitos West Health & Rehabilitation, then as a Registered Nurse. She spent the final chapter of her nursing career at Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk, caring for psychiatric patients whom much of the world overlooks. She loved that work, and the friendships she made there lasted long past her retirement.

In 1988, after Carrie’s second-eldest sister introduced them to Sunrider, Carrie and Samson began building a business together with the company, whose herbal products matched her deep conviction that caring for your health is the foundation of everything else. She was a true believer, and the business she and Samson built changed the family’s trajectory, allowing her to retire early and fill those years with the things she loved most: her family, her temple, and the world.

Carrie faced breast cancer three times. After her first diagnosis, she found her way to Buddhism and became a devoted member of Hsi Lai Temple in Hacienda Heights. Her practice shaped how she lived. Friends and family knew her as unfailingly kind, generous, and selfless, the first to offer help and the last to ask anything for herself. She often reminded the people she loved, in Chinese, that health is the most important thing (健康最重要). And though she was a vegetarian for decades, she still cooked beef noodle soup for Samson, because for Carrie, love was something you did for others.

She loved to travel and saw much of the world, from China, India, and Mexico to Kenya, the United Arab Emirates, Banff, and many places in between.

Carrie is survived by her husband, Samson; her son, Lawrence, and his wife, Jennifer; her daughter, Eva, and her husband, Habib; her six grandchildren, Hafsa, Musa, Yusuf, Aneesa, Miles, and Mason, who knew her as Nai Nai and Ah-ma; and her eldest and youngest sisters in Taiwan.

A Funeral Service will be held at Hua Yuan - Hall of Grace, 3890 Workman Mill Road, Whittier, CA 90601, US, on July 31, 2026, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.

謝佳玲（Carrie Huang）女士於2026年7月20日，也就是她七十八歲生日當天，在加州拉米拉達（La Mirada）的家中安詳辭世。家人與西來寺的師兄師姐陪伴在側，為她助念。

Carrie於1948年7月20日出生於台灣，是家中六名子女之一。她在台灣成為外科護理師。1980年，她與丈夫Samson移民美國，一切從頭開始。她一邊撫養兩個孩子，一邊學習英文、上夜校，一步步重建自己的護理生涯。她先在阿拉米托斯西區健康與復健中心（Alamitos West Health & Rehabilitation）擔任執業護士（Licensed Vocational Nurse，LVN），之後取得註冊護理師（Registered Nurse，RN）資格。她護理生涯的最後階段是在諾沃克（Norwalk）的大都會州立醫院（Metropolitan State Hospital）度過的，照顧那些常被社會忽視的精神科病患。她十分熱愛這份工作，在那裡結下的友誼，也延續至她退休多年之後。

1988年，經由Carrie的二姊介紹，夫妻倆開始共同經營仙妮蕾德（Sunrider）事業。該公司的草本產品，與她始終深信的理念十分契合：照顧好自己的健康，是一切的根本。她由衷相信這些產品與理念，也全心投入這份事業。她與Samson攜手建立的事業改變了全家的人生道路，使她得以提早退休，把往後的歲月留給她最愛的一切：家人、道場，以及探索世界。

Carrie一生三度罹患乳癌。初次罹癌後，她與佛法結緣，成為哈仙達崗（Hacienda Heights）西來寺虔誠的信眾。佛法與修行深深影響了她待人處世的方式。在親友眼中，她始終善良、慷慨而無私，總是最先伸出援手，卻極少為自己開口。她常提醒所愛的人：「健康最重要。」她茹素數十年，卻仍會為Samson煮牛肉麵；因為對Carrie而言，愛，就是為他人付出。

她熱愛旅行，足跡遍及世界許多角落，包括中國、印度、墨西哥、肯亞、阿拉伯聯合大公國、加拿大班夫，以及許多其他地方。

謝佳玲（Carrie Huang）身後留下摯愛的家人：丈夫Samson；兒子Lawrence與媳婦Jennifer；女兒Eva與女婿Habib；六名孫子女Hafsa、Musa、Yusuf、Aneesa、Miles和Mason，他們親暱地喚她「奶奶」或「阿嬤」；以及居住在台灣的大姊與小妹。

告別式將於惠提爾（Whittier）玫瑰崗墓園（Rose Hills Memorial Park）華園舉行。2026年7月31日，上午10:00至中午12:00。
