Henry, you were a great friend and you are missed terribly. For one, I have not laughed as often or as hard since you left. RIP my dear friend. Gil Guzmán

I miss my friend Henry.  Last time I spoke to Henry he had called me to just catch up.  Which was typical over the many years of our friendship.
It was a few weeks before his passing. He would call me from time to time just to ask me how I was 
doing and talk about politics and how Latinos and Latinas where always getting the "short end of the stick".
After speaking with him I thought about the possibility it might be the last I would be speaking with him.
He told me he had fallen in front of his house and I thought what is going on with him I wondered?
Just a feeling in the pit of my stomach after we talked. I mentioned to him on the call that I would be coming
to LA to get together soon and have lunch or dinner. He said that would be great and give him a call.
I called and called and found that his phone was no longer in service. It was then I felt maybe he had passed into
the arms of the Lord. 
I miss my friend Henry.

I first met Mr. Lozano when he attended our scholarship banquets for the California Chicano News Media Association in the 1990s when I served as executive director.  I was new to LA but it quickly became apparent that he was among  those great trailblazers for our community that I had met in California in the 70s when working as a TV reporter.  Although he barely knew me, he always shared great wisdom, corazon and support of our efforts to improve news coverage of our communities.  You realize later that you were truly blessed to cross paths with amazing leaders like Mr. Lozano.

There is so much to say about my Grandpa.He gave me all he could, holding nothing back and never asking for anything in return.
My grandpa never had to count on technology to remember my birthday, his grandchildren birthday or any other important date. His love for me was a reminder enough.
And when time took its tole on his mind and his memory, I made a point to make sure his days were still special. Because that is what he had always done for me.
His endless love and dedication made me into the person I am today, and his memory lives in everything I do,

Henry Lozano - what a gifted and compassionate man. My heart is broken. This man changed my life when my Uncle Ernie Padilla first requested that he interview me for a job with Congressman Roybal. I was so naive that I did not realize this great experience that would mark and change my life forever. Henry looked at my resume and saw skills and hope in a young woman who knew how our paths crossing would change my life. Henry placed me in the Washington, DC office of the Chairman's Select Committee on Aging. The rest, for me, is history. Although I have not been directly involved in politics for many years since I am now a teacher, the lessons learned remain in everything that I do and define who I am. I bring that passion to the classroom and it has provided me the opportunity to share the many stories and life lessons I learned working on Capitol Hill. I am sure that I am just one of many who life was touched and changed by this incredible man. Thank you, Henry, for defining who I am and helping me to understand the greatness of my culture and this country.

Henry, we met in 1974, when you “forced” me to join the American G.I.Forum— turned out to be a great introduction to civil rights and Chicano politics, from the perspective of one of the best insiders in L.A. politics. 

It was the beginning of a great friendship, one that endured countless of sibling-like skirmishes, and even more great moments of laughter and Vato fun. 

Although you were onery and defiant to end, I never stopped loving you like the big carnal that you were. Thank you for being a great friend for the past 45 years. You have left a huge void in my life, and I will miss you for many years to come.

You were the prime example of  hard work, tenacity and charisma; thank you for creating such a solid foundation for your grandchildren to stand on and leaving a legacy we will cherish forever.

Farwell Uncle Henry,
I will miss your yearly visits to see us in Harlingen.  My dad always enjoyed having you at the house.  I will most miss seeing you asleep in the big chair, but as you alway said you where not asleep. You always made Pat laugh, she is very sad, she like us love you and will miss you dearly.  Our mother  (Celia) always loved seeing you, my mother had great memorys of you all.

My heart is filled with sorrow at the passing of Henry Lozano! A true icon, he made a huge difference in my life and in the lives of many! I knew Henry since childhood in the 1960's. He and my mother, Frances Diaz, were very, very close. Henry got us involved in so many political campaigns and fundraisers.  I was privileged to work for the Honorable Edward R. Roybal because of him, an experience that forever changed my life and helped me grow as a person! Henry, you are now up in Heaven with my mom, Congressman ("The Boss") and Mrs. Roybal and those who fought for Justice! You made an impact on our society, leaving behind a legacy that will forever inspire those of us who value humanity!

I will always remember my "Tocayo" as a friend and confidant. He always took the time to listen, and offer advice. He had his own special way and colorful language. He assisted my grandmother and mother in obtaining their U.S. citizenships. Government will miss an excellent and caring public servant...we all will miss a loving and dear friend.  

Henry was such a wonderful friend to my father and our family.  Since I was 4 years old, we spent many days/nights at campaign headquarters together or Googie's having pancakes, a favorite  meeting spot in Monterey Park.   I was always pestering him trying to entertain myself and he was so good about it and made boring meetings with my Dad a lot more fun.  He was so mad at me for teasing him when he shaved off his mustache....sorry but he really did look funny.  And he was livid when I scared him with my school project; rattlesnake eggs.  That was the first time I heard a grown man actually scream (he's probably irritated with me now for publicly broadcasting that).  As I got older and attended events on my own,  we'd always make eye contact within a crowd and wouldn't depart without sharing an old friend hug and a laugh.  No matter what event it was, I knew I'd always see his warm, familiar face.  I miss him already.

Henry was the man who opened the political doors for me when he was the long time Chief of Staff for Rep. Ed Roybal. I was so politically green when I came into LA from the San Joaquin Valley, specifically Farmersville. His office at Civic Center was the first I walked into. He gave me an internship in LA, my first gig in DC working for NALEO which lead me to many great opportunities and experiences like being a county party chairman to working in Public Affairs for the LA Times to elective office. He knew all about Latino politics like his boss, a subject I had great interest in. Henry could have been a congressman but instead passed the torch to Xavier Becerra, today's state attorney general. I had the opportunity a couple of years ago to thank him and tell him about my journey. After we spoke.. It nevered failed, he told me.. "Let's go over here, I want you to meet someone." Thank you Henry for the guidance, connections and friendship. Rest in Peace and may Blessings be with you for your public service and for everytime you gave a hand up to those who wished to serve and be a voice for our community.

What a loss but a priceless asset to the empowerment of Latinos/as throughout Los Angeles and California.   He represented the history  of the rise of Latino/a elected officials and mentored countless young men and women who now lead California.   He was my mentor, friend and confidant and I'll always be grateful for his friendship and support.    In my time working with Congressman Roybal in WDC, Henry was the go-to person for anything important to the Congressman and to his leadership.   His loss is bittersweet; the end of an era but an amazing legacy.  RIP my dear friend and to his family; know he is honored and remembered!  Fernando  Torres-gil

Old School barely describes the Man - his generation wrote the book, always principled always tough yet there was that gentle side with quick and robust laughter. Oh man the laughs we had to balance the serious moments. I hear his voice, that raspy clipped way in which he spoke - his guidance, wisdom and loyalty to The Boss and his abiding love of children. So many memories of Henry from my days at MALDEF, LA City Council, Northeast Dems and more.  One of my fondest is when Henry  asked me to cater a last minute political fundraiser at the AT&T penthouse for a candidate that he truly believed in. Although I was given less than a 24 hour notice, I managed to pull it off.  Henry was quite pleased with the results and on the spot told me (not asked) to repeat the exact same menu for the upcoming victory party.  Not only was the food a hit...the candidate he so believed in won! Good times had by all in the room that night. THANKS HENRY. Much love...

I had the honor in meeting Henry when l was elected Mayor of South El Monte. He was a wise and kind person who l respected and admired. I loved talking with him wherever l ran into him. He always had great advice and a friendly smile. He touched many hearts.  I will miss this wonderful and dear person. RIP mi amigo querido....you will be missed. God bless you. 🌹

I Will Miss Henry forever and wont Ever forget Him. A Truly one of a kind Man that was full of Joy and positivity at all times. His presents  was an honor to have around at anytime of day or night. Henry was my first boss and my first mentor. He taught me the importance of fighting for what you believe in and for what is right. He had the best sense of humor and a deep love for Texas. I still remember  the day he took us to the best Texan food restaurant in Azusa “Taste of Texas”.  Henry you were one of a kind and will never be forgotten.
