Derrick, a Forever Angel

I was heartbroken when I heard the news of Derrick’s passing.  Derrick became a very good friend of mine over the years.  He had that rare gift of having an infectious personality that lit up any room he entered.  I was looking for pictures I have with Derrick, but I couldn’t find any despite the hundreds of times we hung out together.  I realized that’s because every moment with him was spent with heavy laughter and living in the moment.  Derrick, I’ll miss you my brother and will never forget you.  To his family, you will remain in our thoughts and prayers.

Ms. Young sending our deepest condolences to you. So sorry for your loss. You have been a bright and shiny light to our family. You are in our prayers and we love you dearly. Weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning. We are here if you need us.

Derrick, I can’t believe i’m writing this…
You brought so much love and laughter into our family, and your presence is deeply missed every single day. You had a way of showing love that was quiet but strong, and I’ll carry that with me always.

Even though you’re not here physically, please continue to watch over us. I hope you’ve found peace and that heaven feels like home. Until we meet again…know that you’ll always be loved and remembered.

Ms. Loretta and all who knew and loved Derrick, there are no words!  You and Derrick welcomed my Mom and I instantly into your lives. I’ve lost count of how many holidays we’ve shared. You two reminded me what it means to be Black and a Christ follower: No one is a stranger and we’re all a big family.  

I always thought Derrick was so handsome and respectful and I appreciated his passion for history. 

May the Holy Spirit comfort you and give you consolation like only He can.

My sweetheart! My handsome little cousin. I was super excited and eagerly awaited your arrival into this world. A King was going to be born. I was excited once you got here. Granny and I cried. I didn’t care about getting in trouble for you. Whatever you wanted, it was going to be yours. Toys that made noise just to drive your mom crazy! I just wanted to buy you the world. Your Toddler University Tennis Shoes, baseball jacket, and black pants. So handsome Sneaking you all kind of treats here and there. Letting everyone know they could get if they messed with my baby. 

You captivated everyone right from the start, stealing hearts, making people laugh, smart and intelligent.  Your beautiful smile you could see coming. I am struggling with this. I know God needed you more than we did. Your work here delivering smiles and acts of kindness has been completed

Never hearing your voice, laughter or you saying my name or seeing your delightful smile is crushing me. I love you to infinity and I always ended our conversations and greetings that way because you were and will forever be special to me. 

Our Superman not only has a cape, but now has wings and soars high above. I love you cousin. I will stop crying eventually, but not yet. My heart is broken into pieces. Rest in Peace . God has you and granny soaring watching over us.  Auntie, my condolences to you. I love you and thank you for sharing your precious gift with me… I’m here for you.

My brother in life and in the Lord. I love you man. My heart is crushed, but I know your wonderful Spirit is in heaven with Jesus.

You’re such an incredible human. You impacted my life in an amazing way. You came into my life when I needed it most. You’re a big reason why I’m walking in the purpose God gave me on this earth.

I still can’t believe you’re gone. I can still hear you saying, “Hey baby sis,” and me saying back, “I’m not a baby!” lol. We were supposed to have that night at your place and cook in the new pot set I gave you. You were the funniest person, and you always knew how to make me laugh. Derrick and I were roommates in college at Fresno State. During our time there we looked out for each other, supported one another and really became brothers. My family and I send our love, prayers and thoughts to Ms. Young and all of his loved ones.

I’ve known Derrick since we were 13 years old.  From verbum dei to fresno state. A groomsman in my wedding and an uncle to my kids. I love you brotha. Until we meet again!

Derrick was truly one of a kind.. we met in college and have remained very close up until his passing.  I'm truly devestated. He taught me so much and I will always cherish that.  He was so excited about the new opportunities that was coming his way. Im sad he won't be able to experience it. Prayers to his family especially his mom.  He always shared how much he cared for her.

Sending my love, prayers, and condolences. Derrick was one of the funniest guys I knew and just an all round good guy.
