

David Tse Pang Fang, lovingly known as Dr. Fang, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2024, in San Gabriel, California, at the age of 90. He was surrounded by his loved ones, who came together to bid him farewell. David, ever the fighter, held on until his family arrived, taking his last breath with a gentle peace that reflected the love and grace he carried throughout his life.
A Life of Milestones and Achievements
David’s lifelong dream of becoming a doctor was realized when he graduated from Loma Linda University Medical School in 1971. He further specialized in Colorectal Surgery at the University of Minnesota, completing his training in 1982. Over the years, his career was marked by numerous prestigious roles:

Through CAPA and his partnership with Loma Linda University, David brought to life his vision of a China Physicians Exchange Program. Over 25 years, this initiative provided training for more than 200 physicians and nurses, enabling them to return to their hospitals in China and make a lasting impact on healthcare.
One of David’s crowning achievements was the creation of the 400-bed Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital in Hangzhou, China. Developed in partnership with Loma Linda University, it became the first Western-style teaching hospital in China, earning JCI accreditation. When asked why he dedicated himself to this monumental project, David answered simply: “Love.” His unwavering love for his church, his profession, and humanity motivated his remarkable efforts.
A Legacy of Dedication
Even after retiring in 1999, David responded to the call of his former students to bring his expertise to the San Gabriel Valley. He worked at Alhambra Hospital, San Gabriel Valley Medical Center, and Garfield Medical Center. In 2005, he stepped away from surgery but continued to serve as Vice President of Medical Affairs at Alhambra Hospital, offering his vast knowledge to improve hospital operations and patient care.
As a physician, David was respected and admired by his peers, students, and colleagues. As a family man and friend, he was cherished for his warmth, humor, and boundless generosity. His love for life and his unwavering desire to make a positive impact on humanity will forever be remembered. David Tse Pang Fang’s legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, and he will be deeply missed.
