Carl Melvin Rhodes

In 1943, at the age of 9, Carl and his family established a residence in Los Angeles, CA. He received his elementary and secondary education in Compton, CA. He attended Willow Brook Elementary School, Willow Brook Junior High School and Compton High School. Upon his graduation from High School, he received a fulltime scholarship to pursue his career in football. Because of his loyalty to service his country, he enlisted in the Unites States Air force on February 12, 1952. On May 26, 1952, he married the love of his life, Margaret L. Rhodes where they resided on the U.s. Air Force Base at the McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento, CA. He had five children, Sherry, Melvin, Rhonda, Debra, Rhodes who preceded him in death and Latonya. He was always a driving force in the lives of his children and always encouraged each of his children to seek higher education. Each of his children was able to accomplish their goals and this was very pleasing to him.

Carl served in the U.S. Air Force for duration of 4 years and in February 1956; he received an honorable discharge from the military. The family established residence in Los Angeles, CA. Carl embarked on his career as an electrician and became employed with the city of Los Angeles, Department of Water and Power. After a successful career, he retired from the Department of Water and Power at the age of 55.

Carl was known for his strong and bold personality. He had loads of friends and kept in touch with them all. He was always humorous and the life of the party. Carl was a devoted father and family man, the backbone of his family. He was also a devoted grandfather. His gratification in life was to share love and happiness with his family, friends and especially his grandchildren. His delight was to celebrate the Holidays with a full day of playing cards and dominoes. Carl was a man of strength and courage and no one could ever walk in his shoes.

Carl was a member at New Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. He took pride in his church because of his enhanced life. He was a strong father figure and a mentor to the young men and women in his community. He demanded excellence of every young person on his block. Carl was highly respected in his neighborhood and his community.
