Alice Mary Taylor

Alice Mary Taylor, 97, passed away on the 29th of December 2020 at PIH Hospital in Whittier, California. She was born on the 26th of December 1923 in Heywood, Lancashire, England to parents Alfred and Marion (Mills) Schofield.

Alice grew up in Heywood with her two siblings, brother John “Jack” and sister June. She attended Magdala Primary School and later, Regent Street Central High School. At a very young age she worked in a local bakery and then during World War II, she proudly did her part for the war effort working at Pirelli in her hometown. There she assembled cables for military airplanes alongside her cousins.

During the war she met an American G.I., Ruben Gonzales, who would become her husband in 1942. As a war bride, she sailed to America from Manchester, England on the Queen Mary and joined her husband in Los Angeles to start their new life together. They were married for twenty eight years, residing in Pico Rivera, California before parting ways.

Alice was employed at Sears and Roebuck in Los Angeles as an auditor, where she met her beloved husband Richard “Dick” Taylor, a Merchandise Manager for their Catalog Division. They were happily married for forty six years until Dick’s passing in 2014.

Alice loved her life with Dick, enjoying the many vacations they took as a couple and with family to places like Hawaii, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Egypt and Morocco, among others. They were avid horse race fans and enjoyed many happy days at Santa Anita racetrack with family and friends. She loved Big Band 40’s music, dancing and weekend gatherings. She cherished moments spent with family and extended family, sharing a long lifetime of celebrations and special occasions filled with love, laughter and happy memories. She especially enjoyed time with her sister shopping, and in later years, watching daily soaps, Hallmark movies and PBS Masterpiece Theater together. Since Dick’s passing 7 years ago, Alice had become close with her stepdaughter “Dee” and looked forward to enjoying their lunches together every Wednesday with many laughs and chats on the phone between visits. She also looked so forward to her 3 grandchildren‘s visits and their celebratory lunches out together.

Alice will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by her loving family; sister June, nephew Steven, her niece and goddaughter Adele, her stepdaughter Rhonda “Dee” and grandchildren Lauren, Lindsay and Taylor.
