Doctor Stephen Show Kang Tzeng, a faithful servant of God, was born to Dr. Chian Shing Tzeng and Dr. Yeh Po Kao on July 23,1949 in Taipei, Taiwan. He was the second born of three sons including the eldest, Dr. Thomas Tzeng and youngest, Dr. James Tzeng. Stephen was part of a proud heritage of physicians including his father, a surgeon who owned a hospital, his two brothers, who are cardiac surgeons, and his mother, an internist.
Stephen met his beloved wife Marian in Taipei Medical College and they were married in the summer of 1973. He graduated from Taipei Medical College in June 1974. Marian came first to the United States while Stephen completed 2 years of military service in Taiwan. He was able to join his family permanently in the United States in July 1976 to complete further medical training. He graduated near the top of his class and was board certified in general surgery, plastic surgery and hand surgery.
Stephen and Marian were blessed with three wonderful daughters. Their eldest daughter Grace was born in 1975, their second daughter Alice was born in 1980, and their third daughter Christine was born in 1983.
Stephen had a successful joint private practice in Monterey Park with his wife Marian, who practiced pediatrics alongside him for 27 years. In spite of the fullness of life that comes with practicing medicine, Stephen and Marian chose to put God and family first. They dedicated their lives to modeling their faith actively to their three daughters, teaching them to love God with all of their hearts, souls and minds, to read and study God’s word, to pray, to be generous and to be bold to tell others about Jesus. Their lives were centered around their church community: hosting Friday night fellowship, leading early morning prayer meetings, developing curriculum and teaching Sunday school, singing in the worship team and choir, translating during outreach, and training events, and preaching in both English and Chinese services.
Stephen retired from the professional medical field in 2011. After his retirement, he continued to be invited to preach in many different churches and ministries. He was a well-loved preacher, translator, Sunday school teacher and faithful servant.
Stephen and Marian joined the ministry of First Evangelical Church of San Gabriel Valley as part of the Taiwan West Coast short-term mission team. Together with their team, they would visit more than 20 middle schools each summer and taught more than 1200 students every year since 2012.
Stephen went home to be with the Lord on November 12, 2023, at the age of 74. He leaves behind his dear wife Marian Tzeng, eldest daughter Grace Dale, son-in-law Thomas Dale, grandsons Joshua and Alejandro; middle daughter Alice Gonzales, son-in-law Eddie Gonzales, grandsons Eddie, Mateo, Michael, and Keone; youngest daughter Christine Tzeng, son-in-law Yong Ho Kim, and his faithful companion and dog, Momo.
Stephen leaves a great legacy of dedication to God’s word and His purposes in the world. As his family and friends, we will strive to seek first the kingdom, love each other and glorify God together.
A funeral service for Stephen will be held Saturday, November 25, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Rose Hills Memorial Park - SkyRose Chapel, 3888 Workman Mill Rd, Whittier, California 90601.
