Vicente was born in Chinacates, Durango, Mexico on January 22, 1945 to Anselma Rodriguez and Jose Inez Gonzalez. At the young age of 14, he moved to Matamoros, Tamaulipas where he later met the love of his life, Moncerrato. He told the story of how he would purposely get on the bus at the bus stop ahead of hers so he could “accidentally” bump into her. They had six children: Martha, Jose, Daniel, Vicente, Rosa, and Jorge. In addition, he is survived by 20 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren who all loved him dearly. They were all his “corazones”.
My dad was an avid fan of the Dodgers and never wanted to miss a game. He could always be found watching the game on television (muted) and listening to it in Spanish on the radio. Sportscasters Jaime Jarrin and Vin Scully became members of the family. We would call each other before, during, and after the games to talk about what had transpired. I’m going to miss those phone calls.
He made friends everywhere he went. Even when there was a language barrier, it didn’t seem to matter. My dad was a staple in the neighborhood where he walked every day for years. He would sit in the front yard, enjoying his newspaper and having a conversation with anyone that walked by. He was so loved that, on the day of his passing, he had a procession of people standing outside to pay their last respects.
My dad was loved by his friends and family and will be forever missed. He was truly one of a kind! He enjoyed life to the fullest and had no regrets. He loved to dance, sing, and joke around. We spent many of his last days together laughing, joking, bantering playfully, and listening to his favorite music. I will always miss having another dance, another joke, another song, another anything with you. I love you and will forever miss you, Dad.
