Teddie Joe Merritt

Teddie Joe Merritt was born and raised in a small town in Centers, Texas on July 20, 1937 from the parents of Viola Roberts and Manual Coverson. She had 3 brothers and 5 sisters who proceeded her in death. Teddie was a firm believer in creating family fun memories through gatherings.

Being adventurous, Teddie decided to move to California. To her surprise, she would meet and marry the first love of her life, James Griffin Sr., and produce 6 wonderful children, before proceeding to death in 1994. James admired Teddie, dearly. Their children are James Jr., Barbera (proceeded in death), Lois, Patricia, Darrell, and Dewayne.

Teddie had a rare knack for making people feel right at home. This gift was just a small thank you for the memorable friendship she would create and appreciate. Her compassion toward humankind was highlighted by her family and friends' gatherings. Teddie raised her children while fostering countless others. She raised Tyrone Reagor, Shawana Griffin, Anthony Dent, and James Bradley as her birth children. Her doors were open with love, wisdom, patience, and understanding.

One could credit her value system to her firm faith in Jesus Christ and Ephesians 4:32, which is why she was so blessed and protected. She attended Bible Deliverance Church in Los Angeles, CA. Oftentimes, people admired her superior cooking skills and often pleaded with her for her "secret" recipes. Equally important, was her unique fashion. She could out cook and out dress the best of them. Holidays and her birthdays were precious to her. One of her favorite hobbies was going to the casinos hoping to win, only to share stories and then give her money away, or help them win.

Believing in love and family, in 1996, she met and then married Floyd Merritt. He admired her dearly. Floyd's admiration for Teddie was so unique, that he affectionately called her “His Special One”. Their love and affection for each were like no other.

On June 10, 2023, Teddie Joe Merritt was ready to enter heaven's gate, and God opened them with open arms. She entered peacefully.

14 Grandchildren: Tyrone; Shawana; Christopher (Kisha); Latisha (Darrell); James Jr.; Edward; Jamica; Enisha; Elyciana; Keyiana; Evonte (Arianna); Mickey; Davton: and David. 2 Godgrand children: Kyion and Kaden. 20 Great-Grandchildren and 6 Great-Great Grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Teddie was preceeded in death by Viola Roberts (mother); Manual Coverson (Father); James Griffin Sr. (1st husband); Barbara Green (Daughter); James Knox Jr. (Grandson); and her siblings.
