Shu Nung (nee Wu) Fung, beloved wife of the late Sui An Fung and cherished mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away peacefully at home on May 28, 2026, surrounded by her family. Shu often attributed her long and fulfilled life to the love and care she received and her faith in God.
Born in Foochow, Fujian, China to Chien Yi Wu and Chung Shun (nee Chiang) Wu, Shu excelled academically. She attended National Hunan University when few women pursued higher education. After relocating to Taiwan, she earned a B.A. in Accounting from National Taiwan University. Her top score on the national exam earned her a position at the national utility company. In 1950, she married her soulmate, Sui An Fung, and together they welcomed two daughters Joan and Jean.
After immigrating to the United States, their family grew with births of three sons John, James and Peter. Shu pursued graduate studies at Lehigh University and Texas Tech University, ultimately earing her MBA. During Sui An’s doctoral studies at Cornell University, Shu worked as a librarian at the Chinese Library. Remarkably, she continued to support relatives abroad while feeding a family of seven on a graduate student stipend.
Their American dream flourished in Los Angeles, CA, where Sui An worked in the aerospace industry, and Shu worked as an accountant for a couple of LA businesses. Together, they instilled in their children the values of hard work, perseverance, and education — values reflected in the advanced degrees and contributions of all five children.
After Sui An’s passing 31 years ago, Shu remained the heart of her family. She considered the steady stream of family in and out of her home a blessing. She treasured the many years she shared with her sister, brother, and in-laws. Her garden full of rose bushes and fruit trees is a favorite for animals and great grandchildren alike. Even in her later years, Shu taught her family how to live gracefully. Her faith deepened and this trust in the Lord brought her peace.
Shu is survived by her five children—Joan (Richard) Tomc, Jean (David) Tse, John (Beth) Fung, James (Heather) Fung, and Peter (Suan) Fung; her 13 grandchildren—Jamie (Rob) Dalton, Dana (Brennan) Dougherty, Brian (Sharon) Tse, Jeffrey Tse, Justin Fung, Lauren Fung, Brendan (Brady Burke) Fung, Shannon Fung, Jordan Fung, Natalie Fung, Melanie Fung, Christopher (Sarah) Fung, and Jonathan (Grace) Fung; and her 8 great grandchildren—Audrey and Ethan Tse, Morgan and Andi Dougherty, Sloane and Levi Dalton, and Tabitha and Kristi Fung. She is also survived by her sisters in law, Jenet Fung and Ann Yueh O Wu, as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Chien Yi and Chung Shun Wu; her husband, Sui An Fung; her brother, Shu Kan (aka Kent) Wu; her sister, Shu I (aka May) Tang; her sister-in-law, Shirley Fung; and her brothers in law, Homer Tang, Yin Qui Fung, and Qui An Fung.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Rose Hills Memorial Park’s Hillside Chapel (3888 Workman Mill Rd, Whittier, CA; Gate 17). A visitation will take place earlier that day from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Visitation Center (same address; Main Gate).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Chinese Bible Church at 10521 W Pico Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90064 (please make check payable to "Chinese Bible Church" and note that it is in memory of Shu-Nung Fung) or online at https://cbclosangeles.org/giving/ (English) and https://www.wlacbc.org/Chi/ (Chinese).
