Peggy Burlingham was born near Little Rock, Arkansas in July 1934. At age 9, her single mother moved Peggy and her younger sister, Jenny, across the country to Los Angeles. Peggy cared deeply for Jenny throughout their lives, beginning a lifelong devotion to family.
At 20, Peggy spotted a handsome older man with a nice sports car and asked her friend, “Who is he? I would love to drive that car.” His name was Bill Burlingham, and they would share a remarkable 53-year marriage until his passing in 2008. Together, they raised 2 kids and built El Monte Plastics into a thriving business employing hundreds of people, many from the El Monte community. Peggy was a force within the company and, as her family would say, she was a Boss- through and through.
When her kids were still in elementary school, Peggy graduated cum laude from California State University, Long Beach with a degree in Dietetics. She was active in the American Association of University Women and passionate about women pursuing higher education. Her own love of learning never faded; at age 75, she attended Whittier College for a semester.
Peggy also broke barriers in the plastics industry as the only woman serving on the board of the Association of Rotational Molders. She was a respected pillar in both her industry and community.
Peggy was a wonderful role model to her four grandchildren, all of whom earned college degrees and built successful careers. Those who knew her will remember her as incredibly generous, brilliant and truly one of a kind. Her remarkable mind remained sharp until the end- quick, curious and unmistakably Peggy.
Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bill, Peggy is survived by her sister, Jenny, and her loving children, grandchildren and great-grandson. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends and devoted caregivers.
Peggy Joyce Burlingham will be laid to rest at Rose Hills Memorial Park, 3888 Workman Mill Rd, Whittier, in the Garden of Peace, Gate Number 1, Row 6, Lot 2538, Space 2.
