Many important events happened in 1927. The president of the United States was Calvin Coolidge, the cost of a first class stamp was .02 cents and work began on Mount Rushmore. Nineteen twenty seven also saw the birth of Cesar Chavez and Pope Benedict XVI. But, none as important to us as the birth of our beloved “Mama Fide.” We don’t know what her real name was or where or when exactly she was born but we do know the effect that she has left in our lives.

Mama Fide was born in Guatagiagua, San Miguel in the country of El Salvador to humble parents who were farmers. She had 7 brothers and 1 sister. She lost her mother at the tender age of 7 and was raised by her grandmother. In the farm she learned to milk cows, raise chickens and cook; unfortunately she did not learn how to read. She loved to dance and would often attend country dances where she found many suitors. But, she was a dreamer and an adventurer. She always knew that she was meant to have a different life.

At 18 she moved to San Salvador, El Salvador. She found that life was different and that finding work was challenging. She became a housemaid. As such, she gave birth to Miriam (1946) but couldn’t care for her and made the tough decision to leave her with relatives in Chinameca, San Miguel. She returned to San Salvador to work and gave birth to Dora (1949). But, it was difficult to find work with a small child therefore she decided to try her luck in Santa Ana.

After searching for a stable job, she decided to try sales. She became a meat seller. She would load her basket daily, place it on her head and walk the streets to make a living for her and her children. She did this for 20 years. During this time she gave birth to Rafael (1957) and Luis (1963).

In 1981, due to a Civil War in El Salvador, she moved to Monterrey, Mexico where she lived for six months with her son Luis and her 2 grandchildren (Marlon and Patty). December 21, 1981 saw her arrival in the United States of America. Mama Fide never worked again! She became a homemaker and took care of the household and her grandchildren. During this time, she was fortunate to always have a warm house, plenty of food, health and a loving family. In 1996 she was able to travel, by airplane, to El Salvador to see old friends. Mama Fide enjoyed playing the slot machines and loved going to Las Vegas. She was also fortunate enough to visit Florida, San Francisco, San Diego, Tijuana and Nogales, Mexico.

Mama Fide was blessed with 81 years of life. And, they were well lived! She was born in a setting where there was no electricity or running water but was able to overcome all challenges with the strength that our Lord provided her. She has moved on to be with the Lord but we know that from heaven she is still praying for us.

Mama Fide we love you, miss you and you will continue to live in our hearts and in the many stories we have to share where you are the protagonist. We will see you in heaven!

Muchos acontecimientos importantes sucedieron en 1927. El presidente de los Estados Unidos era Calvin Coolidge, el costo de una estampilla de primera clase era .02 centavos y el trabajo comenzó en la Montaña Rushmore. Mil novecientos veintisiete también vio el nacimiento de Cesar Chavez y el Papa Benedicto XVI. Pero, ningunos tan importantes para nosotros como el nacimiento de nuestra querida “Mamá Fide.” No sabemos cuál era su nombre real o donde o cuando ella nació exactamente pero sabemos el efecto que ella ha tenido en nuestras vidas.

Mamá Fide nació en Guatagiagua, San Miguel en el país de El Salvador a humildes padres que eran granjeros. Ella tuvo 7 hermanos y 1 hermana. Ella perdió a su madre a la tierna edad de 7 años y fue criada por su abuela. En la granja ella aprendió a ordeñar las vacas, críar pollos y cocinar; desafortunadamente ella no aprendió a leer. A ella le gustaba bailar y hiba a menudo a los bailes donde encontró muchos pretendientes. Pero, ella era una soñadora y una aventurera. Ella sabía que su vida seria diferente.

A los 18 años de edad ella se trasladó a San Salvador, El Salvador. Descubrio que la vida era diferente y que encontrar trabajo era dificil. Ella se convertio en criada. Como tal, ella dio a luz a Miriam (1946) pero no podía cuidarla y tomó la decisión difícil de dejarla con parientes en Chinameca, San Miguel. Ella volvió a San Salvador para trabajar y dio a luz a Dora (1949). Pero, desafortunadamente, era difícil encontrar trabajo con una niña pequeña por lo tanto decidío intentar su suerte en Santa Ana.

Después de fallar en encontrar un trabajo estable, ella decidío intentar ventas. Ella se hizo vendedora de carne. Mamá Fide llenaba a diario la canasta, la colocaba en su cabeza y caminaba las calles para hacer una vida para ella y sus niños. Ella hizo esto por 20 años. Durante este tiempo ella dio luz a Rafael (1957) y a Luis (1963).

En 1981, debido a una guerra civil en El Salvador, ella se trasladó a Monterrey, México en donde vivió por seis meses con su hijo Luis y sus 2 nietos (Marlon y Patty). El 21de diciembre de 1981 llego a los Estados Unidos de América. ¡Mamá Fide nunca trabajó otra vez! Ella se convirtio en ama de casa y estubo a cargo del cuidado del hogar y de sus nietos. Durante este tiempo, ella siempre tuvo la fortuna de tener un lugar donde vivir, comida suficiente, salud y una familia cariñosa. En 1996 ella pudo viajar, en avión, a El Salvador para ver a viejos amigos. A Mamá Fide le gustaba jugar en las máquinas de monedas en Las Vegas. Ella también tuvo la fortunada de visitar la Florida, San Francisco, San Diego, Tijuana y Nogales, México.

Mamá Fide fue bendecida con 81 años de vida. ¡Y, fueron bien vividos! Ella nació en un lugar donde no había electricidad o agua potable pero pudo superar todos los desafíos con la fuerza que nuestro Señor le proporcionó. Ella se ha movido para estar con nuestro Señor pero sabemos que del cielo ella todavía está orando por nosotros.

Mamá Fide, nosotros la amamos, extrañamos y usted continuará viviendo en nuestros corazones y en las muchas historias que tenemos para compartir donde usted es la protagonista. ¡Nos veremos en cielo!
