She was born Young Muk-Lan in Guangzhou, formerly known as Canton, China to Father Lock Lee Young and Mother Fung Lee Lock. She was the eldest of four children.
In March 1940, Lang emigrated from China to Los Angeles with her mother, brother, and cousins. Growing up, she attended San Pedro Street Elementary, LaFayette Junior High, and Polytechnic High School where she was the valedictorian of her graduating class.
