Caron broke the sad news to me a couple of days ago that Dai Kau Fu (eldest uncle) had passed.  I had never called King by his name, but Dai Kau Fu.

We first met on Caron’s wedding day.  After starting a courteous conversation we   chatted for hours.  I can’t recall what we had talked about.  But definitely it was on almost everything.  It ended up we missed the important moment when my brother walked Caron from her bedroom to the lounge room and put her hand in Lawrence’s.

Our conversation was interrupted for no longer than half an hour to attend the tea ceremony.  We then returned to the dining table carried on with our endless discussions.  

A few years later Dai Kau Fu and Dai Kum Mo came to Sydney for sightseeing.  Uncle Melo and I spent a Saturday showing them around.  I had a scheduled fitted for a scientist and intellectual.  

One of the destinations was the Lucas Height Nuclear Reactor, Australia’s only nuclear reactor for medical and scientific researches.  Unfortunately, we were turned away by an Australian federal police at some distance from the building. There’s no visitor centre.

A historic site was a must for Dai Kau Fu.  So we visited Captain Cook’s landing place.  We toured the grounds, chatted on the Age of Exploration.  I mentioned on explorer’s ship, there was a couple for scientists, in particular a botanist. 

Dai Kau Fu told me in a sweet tone he was once yearned to be a botanist.  He gave up his botanic dream only when he realized the reality - he had no talent for sketching and painting.  A successful botanist must have the skills to paint every plant in details, he said.  He endeavoured on physics studies since.

We met again many times in LA thereafter.     There were numerous topics for us to explore. He was a fountain of knowledge, and more than happy to share with others.

Dai Kau Fu’s kindness touched everyone’s heart.  For sure, he will be missed by his family, friends and acquaintances.

May Dai Kau Fu rest in peace.

Uncle King, I didn’t have many opportunities to spend time with you, but in the few moments we shared, I saw someone who carried a quiet wisdom and treated younger generations with a valuable sense of respect and equality. That left a deep impression on me.  
  
I am especially grateful for the way you shared your thoughts and experiences about investing and life. You encouraged us to think for ourselves, to build confidence, and to find our own direction. That is a gift that will stay with us.

這個故事是在廣州的西關老城區開始，爸爸媽媽都上班去了，我和三位男孩子呆在家中，因為時局關系父母嚴令不可以外出，四個不知愁滋味的孩子下課之後總得找些樂子玩玩，由大哥發起最常玩的遊戲是射紙角，把用完的紙張剪開數片，然後把紙片搓成一條小紙條，再屈曲成九十度的一個箭嘴形狀，一條橡筋架在兩隻手指之間把紙條搭在橡筋上拉成弓弩形，拉得滿滿之後，瞄準目標放開拉弓之手，紙條就像弓箭一樣向目標飛奔而去，若被擊中 會有很難受的痛，由於家中有兩張大床相對擺放，於是成為兩軍對壘的戰場，一邊是大哥與四弟，一邊是二哥和我，陣勢擺開，棉被枕頭是掩體，紙彈打光就分工合作，一個仍然做射手，一個是拼命搓紙彈做後勤，可惜每每大戰方酣之際大門轟然打開，爸媽下班回家，戰火嗄然而止，勝負未分，相約再戰，隨即打掃戰場。

這些童年回憶真的像鐵路的一樣長。

Thank you, Uncle King, for being a pioneer that led so much of our family to find home and life in California. Although I was born after many of your life adventures had already been completed, I was able to hear about them secondhand, and am grateful for the way you bravely led your family.

Thank you for the respect that you showed everyone around you. Although I was much younger than you, I never felt intimidated or belittled by you, and was encouraged by your friendliness and knowledge about so many topics.

May your legacy continue to live on in the lives that you influenced, mine included!

In Memory of my Eldest Brother King 

My eldest brother, King, was the most academically accomplished among our five siblings. He was a member of the second graduating class of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he majored in Physics. 

After graduation, as our family's financial situation was limited and he also shared family responsibilities, he taught at a secondary school in Hong Kong for several years while saving for his studies. He later pursued further education in the United States at the University Of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he specialized in space physics. During his studies, he served as a teaching assistant and ultimately earned a PhD in Space Physics. 

He later worked for many years at a space research center before joining Raytheon Technologies. Prior to his retirement, he was assigned to Toronto, Canada, where he participated in the development and implementation of the electronic toll collection system for Highway 407. 

I am the fourth among the siblings, seven years younger than my 
brother. Despite the age difference, there was never any barrier between us, and we always found it easy to talk and connect. 

Over the years, we remained closely connected, often speaking across continents and sharing thoughts on current affairs and everyday life. These seemingly ordinary conversations have become cherished memories. My brother also guided me in long-term investing, from which I benefited greatly. 

Now that my brother has passed, my heart is filled with deep sorrow and a sense of loss. I have not only lost a beloved elder brother, but also a confidant with whom I could share my thoughts openly. The times we spent talking and laughing together will always remain in my memory. 

His presence lives on in our hearts, and his character endures. The bond between us as siblings runs deep and will forever be remembered.

My eldest brother was born on
February 15, 1943.

I recall that when I got married, he was in the United States pursuing his PhD.
At that time, I was only working as a junior clerk in a bank, and my financial situation was not very comfortable.
He, too, was studying while working, striving to cover his tuition and living expenses.
Yet, when he learned that I was getting married, he still made a special effort to send me some U.S. dollars, so that I could purchase a refrigerator and a television after my marriage. 
This brotherly love has remained deeply in my heart. Even to this day, l am profoundly touched and will never forget it.

I also remember that in 2007, we traveled together to Suzhou, China. 
In a moment of inspiration, he composed a poem on the spot, which I have kept to this day. It was then that I truly realized that he was not only a brilliant physicist, but also a man of deep literary cultivation. I admired him greatly.

The poem he wrote is:

Journey to Jiangnan (Spring 2007)
Suzhou silk reaches all lands
Trade has flourished for a thousand years
Over lake country, clouds play with rain
A traveler's feelings will not return as before
Hanshan still stands as ever
Temple bells recall the passing boat Zhouzhuang holds its ancient charm
The maglev carries you far away

My brother lived a life of diligence and quiet strength. He was gifted and accomplished, and he cared deeply for his family. 
His love and support for me will always remain in my heart.
Although he is no longer with us, his presence and his kindness live on within me.

My dearest eldest brother,
as I write these words, my heart is filled with both gratitude and deep sorrow. You were not only my brother, but also my guide, my support, and my quiet strength throughout my life. I will always remember how you cared for me during my college years in the United States. Being far from home, in an unfamiliar place, I often felt uncertain and alone—but you were there for me. Your care, your encouragement, and your steady presence gave me courage and comfort when I needed it most.

After I immigrated to the United States, your influence did not fade—it grew even stronger. You guided me with wisdom and kindness, not only in life, but also in how to plan for the future. Your advice on finances and long-term thinking shaped my path and gave me confidence to move forward with stability and hope. You always reminded me to follow the “Doctrine of the Mean,” to act with balance, humility, and calm judgment in every situation. This has become a lifelong principle that continues to guide me.

You never asked for anything in return, yet gave so much of yourself. Your love was quiet but profound, and it has left a lasting mark on who I am today.

Looking back, I realize how blessed I have been to have you as my eldest brother. The memories we shared, the conversations we had, and the care you showed me are treasures I will carry for the rest of my life. Though you are no longer with us, your love remains deeply rooted in my heart.

My dearest eldest brother, I miss you more than words can ever express. Your love lives on in me every day, quietly guiding me as you always have. Until we meet again, you will forever be in my heart.

You picked me up from LAX in a Buick with red seats. One suitcase, one duffel bag, and one irritated nineteen-year-old, yanked out of Nottingham, UK and dropped into California sun. You didn’t flinch.

Years earlier, you had made that journey — arriving in Maryland — and built a life from the ground up, finding your way as you went.

You explained America along the freeway — calmly, methodically. You never raised your voice — not once.

A white Toyota Camry with seven miles on the clock was waiting in my grandparents’ garage. I cried — practical, but no sports car. That Camry became our classroom. You taught me stop signs, driving on the correct side of the road, and how to use the radio to drown out Grandpa’s commentary. You sat beside me on the drive to school that first time. Every week, without fail, you made the time to look after my grandparents. No fanfare, no fuss. Steady, quiet care. That stayed with me.

When I was introduced as the only grandchild who hadn’t gone to an Ivy League school, you didn’t let the moment settle. Cal is the number one public school. I never forgot that.

Life has a way of circling back. You knew that before I did.

Lunch with Aunty Mo at the Park Club — quiet, warm, exactly right. You shared our family history — that we once made computer shells. I’m grateful for that time.

You recommended The Intelligent Investor—and to put it into practice. That’s a high bar. We laughed over HBR summaries, pretended we’d read the whole article, and debated the WSJ. I preferred the FT — mostly because it’s orange. You were right about bonds, interest rates, dividends, and stock prices. So often right.

You built a life quietly and consistently. An immigrant engineer who laid foundations others could stand on.

Thank you for making this American life possible. You saw something worth building long before I did. 

I will carry it forward — building for others as you built for me.

You will be deeply missed.

When you embarked on your PhD journey to the US in the '70s, I wonder if you knew how many lives your adventure would eventually shape? Your parents, siblings, and nieces and nephews followed your footsteps to pursue the American dream. I am sure the three generations of us all have our unique migration tales to tell.  Here is mine: thank you for bringing my family here so that I was privileged to receive an excellent education with assistive technology and services; I had a shot at securing a career serving the country that invested in my training; and I could legally roam all over North America with my guide dog. My path may seem ordinary, yet few legally blind people enjoy it outside the US.

Finance and food remind me of you. I had hoped to unload all my financial questions onto you at my Dad’s birthday party. I can still hear the excitement in your voice whenever you explained the mysterious nuggets of investment to my non-economic brain. Why food you may ask?  Well, I cite my Uncle King’s daily ramen breakfast ritual to legitimize my ramen addiction whenever the "health police" pester me. 30+ years later, I still remember my first dinner in the US  in 1992. The day we arrived, grandpa forbade napping to “fix” our jet-lag, so that by the time you treated us our American prime rib dinner at Velvet Turtle, only the yummy giant steak could have kept my eyelids open enough to not make a mess.

I refuse to believe that my phone call with you and Auntie Mo after my breast cancer diagnosis last summer would be the last time I heard your robust and clear voice. As we inquired about each other’s well-being, I remember feeling a strange sense of camaraderie, as if we were members of an exclusive club—albeit a club none of us voluntarily joined. Even stranger were our courage and laughter; I remember ending the call without feeling the sorrow as I had anticipated. I wish we had chatted again, but the precious call still left me a heartwarming memory of you.

I was so sorry to hear of King's passing. He was such a nice man and I enjoyed playing bridge with him and Mo at The Colony.  May his memory be of a blessing. I hope Mo will keep in touch with the Colony friends. My deepest sympathy to Mo and family.
