Joanna Fei Yoa, 90, of Los Angeles, California, passed away peacefully at her home on August 21, 2026. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, and her presence will be deeply missed.
Joanna was born in Hubei Province, China, on September 18, 1935, to Po On Young and Pu Fu Young. The daughter of a successful businessman, she lived a full and vibrant life defined by her fierce spirit, sharp intellect, and love of adventure. Joanna studied journalism and carried that curiosity and eye for detail with her throughout her lifetime. She was a savvy and cultured woman who brought a rare combination of grace, grit, and humor to everything she did.
Immigrating to America in 1957, Joanna built a legacy across the country — from New York, to Michigan, and ultimately California. Her determination and strength left a lasting impression on those who knew her, and she approached life with the same boldness she brought to the multiple restaurants she owned and the multi-generational family raised on her watch. Joanna fully embodied hard work, unwavering tenacity, warmth, and generosity. She dedicated her life to her passion for bringing people joy through hospitality, food, and togetherness. When she wasn’t working, Joanna loved to travel, exploring the world and gathering stories and memories she cherished sharing with her loved ones.
Joanna is survived by her four children, nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 45 years, Shing Tek Yoa.
