B: July 2, 1935 - D: June 10, 2024
Our beloved Harvey “Harv” Edwin Callaghan passed away peacefully on June 10th at the age of 88, just shy of his 89th birthday. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Janet Callaghan, and their 3 children Michael, Carrie & Cathy, along with his 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. To know him was to love him, and he will be greatly missed by all.
Harv’s adventure began July 2nd, 1935 in Denver, CO, where he was born to Charles and Gertrude Callaghan, the 2nd of 3 children. The family later relocated to Whittier, CA where Harv met the great love of his life, Janet, who lived just down the street. They quickly fell in love and married in November of 1957 - they were inseparable from then on. Life took them by surprise when Harv was drafted to the Army and they had to move to Berlin, Germany in the early 1960s. While in Germany they welcomed their first child, Michael, to the world. Upon returning to the states, Harv began his career as an educator, and in 1965 the Callaghan clan welcomed twin girls, Carrie and Cathy, making them a happy family of 5.
Harv spent 32 wonderful years as an educator - he taught woodshop, home economics & special education at Tuffree Jr. High School for most of his career. He took great pride in educating young folks and was an incredible mentor to countless students. Aside from being a proud husband, father and grandpa, being a teacher was one of his favorite titles. He embraced the perks of being a teacher and spent his summers packed into a camp-trailer with his family, exploring the continental US and seeing what his children felt were maybe one too many waterfalls.
Harv eventually eased into retirement, cruising the globe with dear friends, spending ample time with family and searching for his ever-elusive Stanley No. 1 Plane. Harv was the life of every party, a deeply generous man with an unbelievably big heart. Everyone was welcome at his table. We will miss him forever and always.
In lieu of flowers, the family would love for you to donate to The Special Olympics using the below link. A celebration of life will be held in July - details forthcoming.
