In 1949, the People’s Republic of China was founded, causing fear and uncertainty for David and his family. David and his family escaped Chinese Communist rule by fleeing to Macau in 1957, where he found God and was baptized. 10 years later, they were able to reunite with David’s older brothers who were already in Los Angeles.
David served in the US Army during the height of the Vietnam War, stationed at Fort Ord, CA. He completed 2 years of service as a Kitchen Supervisor and was honorably discharged. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and earned a Sharpshooter Qualification badge with a rifle.
After completing his education at LA City College, David started his career at Fluor Corporation, where he worked as a Static Equipment Design Engineer. He was a hard worker, putting in overtime hours, working Saturdays, and relocating to Houston, TX for a year. He spent his entire career of almost 40 years with the same company and retired as a Sr. Design Engineer.
David and Evelyn married in 1976, and purchased their first and only home in West Covina, CA. David was a devoted husband and was married to Evelyn for 47 years until his passing. They took care of each other and worked as a team to turn their house into a home, where they raised their 2 boys, Benson and Anson, and took care of their 5 granddaughters.
Family was very important to David. He never hesitated to support anybody who needed help, including his extended family. David loved his sons and did his best to raise them to be responsible and capable men. He was a proud grandfather and attended as many of his granddaughters’ performances, sports games & events as he could. He often shared photos and videos of them with his friends back in Macau. In his retirement, he spent most of his days watching his granddaughters grow up.
David had a passion for deep sea fishing. He enjoyed overnight fishing trips seeking out large bluefin tuna. David and Evelyn owned a timeshare in Cabo, Mexico because David wanted every opportunity possible to go fishing. He enjoyed taking his sons and granddaughters to boat shows and Bass Pro Shop so he could share his love of fishing with his family.
He enjoyed traveling. David took his family on trips every year to places all over North America. He went with Evelyn to her work conferences in Italy, Greece and Mongolia. He took several trips to Macau and his home village in China. David and Evelyn owned an RV so that he could take his granddaughters on road trips and camping. Just weeks before his passing, David & Evelyn took a cruise to Turkey, Italy, Greece, Cyprus and rode camels in front of the pyramids in Egypt.
Ever since finding God and being baptized in Macau, David lived life according to his faith. He attended church every Sunday where he was a greeter and usher. He was often involved in the special events and activities at church. His sons and granddaughters were dedicated in his church, and they went to Lutheran schools as he did. In 2022, Evelyn became a deacon at Monterey Park Chinese Baptist Church, requiring David to become more active in the church and becoming an official member. For his membership ceremony, he stood in front of the congregation and reflected on his life - the good things and the bad, the challenges he faced, the things he once viewed as shortcomings, only to thank God for all of it as blessings because it led him to where he was that day.
David passed away peacefully at home on December 28, 2023 with Evelyn by his side. He is survived by his siblings Alan Tuey, William Hsu, Elaine Chueng, Kennedy Hsu, Donna Ng, his wife Evelyn Hsu, his children Benson Hsu and Anson Hsu, and his granddaughters Kristy, Elise, Susette, Sabine and Callista. He will be remembered for his kind heart, the way he provided for his family, and the big smile he had when he was with his loved ones.
