Darrell Ellerston Shurney was born May 24, 1946 to Robert & Suzie Shurney, in National City, Ca. He was a devoted husband to Priscilla in true sickness and in health, a beloved father to their only child Lauren, a doting grandfather to Malaea & Makoa. A generous friend, loving brother in law, a fun coworker. He passed away very suddenly, but peacefully at home, eating his favorite burger. He was 78 years old.
He spent his early years in Huntsville, AL, went on to graduate from Oakwood High School Academy & immediately enlisted into the U.S. Army in 1966. Deployed and stationed in Korea during the Vietnam War as a combat medic. Following honorable discharge, he continued down the medical path at USC and became a Physician Assistant where he worked at various hospitals and he met his wife, Priscilla. They married in 1976.
Darrell dedicated much of his life to his work. He was known for his workaholic tendencies but took pride in providing luxuries, tropical getaways, and a beautiful home for his family.
Outside of work, he enjoyed playing tennis, skiing, traveling, cooking, gardening, but most of all- FISHING.
He is also survived by his sister Peggy Shurney and youngest brother Ronald Shurney. Close cousins Sharon & Janice Flynt, Allen and Harold Flynt. Family far and wide in Florida, back home in Alabama & Tennessee. Nieces from his dear brother Glenn Shurney, who we all miss and never forget.
Darrell will be remembered for his bountiful generosity to others. His care for others health before his own. His political arguments you either agreed with or quit talking to him for periods of time until he just made you forget it. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Lauren Shurney would be very helpful and appreciated for this sudden, difficult time.
We thank you for being part of and making Darrell’s life so full and one of the greatest adventures one would only dream of having in a single lifetime.
