On December 24, 2025, Betty Nelson entered the waiting arms of Jesus at 96 years old, after declining health from dementia and later a stroke. Born December 24, 1928, in Seymour, Wisconsin to Raymond and Alma Bishop. Betty was the older sister of Virginia.
Betty met Bruce Nelson at Appleton High School. They married in Los Angeles on August 12, 1950. They raised their children in San Gabriel. Betty was a homemaker and active in her children's schools: at Wells Elementary and Muscatel Jr. High, she was in PTA. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout co-leader. She helped backstage with Nancy's dance school performance costumes. She also worked as a librarian at Wells. She loved camping, fishing, cooking and visiting family and friends. Once retired, she travelled to Alaska and enjoyed puzzles with friends.
She later worked at Rio Hondo Jr. College as Instructional Division Secretary Math/Sciences for 30 years, retiring in 2005, at age 70. She took classes and field trips to Hawaii, Yosemite, and many petroglyph sites in California, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico. She loved rocks! Betty was a member of Temple City Lutheran Church where she assisted with alter care.
Betty was preceded in death by her sister Virginia and former husband Bruce. She is survived by son Tom Nelson of San Gabriel and daughter Nancy Reese and husband Paul of Arlington, Washington.
The family would like to give special thanks to Home Health nurses Delia McKay, Nemia Bilaoen, Adrian Bilaoen, and Chrispina T. Dumrique for their compassionate, dignified care of Betty for 3+ years in her home.
A visitation will be held on January 13, 2026, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at Rose Hills Mortuary, located at 3888 Workman Mill Rd, Whittier, California, 90601.
A graveside service will follow on the same day from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Rose Hills Memorial Park, at the same address, with burial in Primrose Lawn, Row 10, Lot 2046, Space 1, Gate 1.
A reception is scheduled on January 13, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Rose Hills Memorial Park - GardenView Reception, also located at 3888 Workman Mill Rd, Whittier, California, 90601.
