Barbara Armstrong was born to Virgil and Laura Armstrong on the 9th of September 1929 in Wichita Falls, Texas. She had an older sister and brother, Gwen and Keith. Five years later she'd have a younger sister, Helen. When Barbara was 13, the family moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado. A few years later they moved to Denver.
Right after high school, she worked for Mountain States Telephone and did some professional modeling on the side. Wanting to get at least a couple of years of college, she went to Abilene Christian College. While there, a mutual friend introduced her to Don Hoagland, also from Denver. They went out a few times, but there was nothing serious on her part. Don, however, found out which church she attended, when they got back to Denver, and pursued her. They dated for two years and got married on the 21st of July 1950. On December 17th , 1952, they had a son, Gregg. Two years, two weeks, and two days later, on January 2nd, 1955, their daughter, Donie, was born.
In 1956, the family moved to Palmdale, California. Don taught at a junior high school, and Barbara worked at Lockheed Air Force Base. Five years later, in 1961, the family moved to La Crescenta, California. Don found a better teaching position in La Canada Flintridge and Barbara became a realtor there. In 1966 they moved from La Crescenta to La Canada Flintridge. From there they spent five years in Riverside, California, and went back to Colorado for a year. A principalship opened for Don in Whittier in 1975, and the family has lived here ever since. Barbara retired from working for the City of La Mirada in 1992.
Her beloved Don went to Jesus the 18th of January 2007
She left behind her son and daughter, Gregg Hoagland and Donie Carlin; her son-in-law Ron Carlin; her nephews Steve Piety and Jack Hoagland; her nieces Diane Smethills, Carole Brinkhoff, Donna Koehn, Dallas Pelletier, Tami Bower, Barbara Boswell and Laura Elder; her cousins Doreta Kempton and Ted Armstrong; and her second cousins Debra Drake and Chuck and Michael Boknevitz. We will miss her until we're with her!
The most important thing to know about her is that she loved her family and her friends deeply. She trusted in what Jesus did on the cross to save us from our sins, and she lived her life pointing others to Him. She's where she lived her life to be, and on June 5th, 2024, at 2:09am, she entered His Presence. She would say, "Fix your eyes on Jesus. Obey His teachings and discover that He is the Love you've been looking for all your life."
