Amelia was born on November 21, 1933, to Samuel Hadley Hanks and Edna Folsom. She has two brothers, Dale and Eugene, and one sister, Pauline. Amelia often shared fond memories of attending Queen Anne Place Elementary and Playground, John Burroughs Junior High, and Los Angeles High School. She attended classes at LA City College with her mother, then transferred to BYU in Provo, Utah. Here, she met her husband, Claudius. They were engaged to marry throughout Claudius’s mission to Mexico. They were married on July 21, 1955 in the Mesa Arizona Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Early in their marriage, Claudius and Amelia spent a few very influential years in Colonia Dublan, Chihuahua, Mexico. They also lived in Monrovia, Montebello, Las Cruces, El Monte, Valinda, and Hacienda Heights.
Amelia’s greatest desire was to be a mom. She was an amazing mother to six children and was thrilled to double that number with their spouses. Mark and Christy, Tony and Marcia, Bill and Carin, Mike and Shawn, Chris and Staci, Martha and Brian blessed Amelia with 25 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Throughout her life, Amelia loved to sunbathe, sew (for herself and many, many others), garden, walk with friends, host gatherings, and serve in the Church. In 2002, Amelia and Claudius were privileged to serve an 18-month mission to the Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic Temple. One of Amelia’s favorite hymns asks, “Have I done any good in the world today? Have I helped anyone in need?” All that she did in her life answers these questions with a resounding, “YES!”
