Barbara Eloise Berry

For Barbara Eloise Berry the journey of life began on January 25, 1934 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, born to the late Linwood Jarvis and Evelyn Walker. She was the sister of Judith Evelyn Shelton and the late Frederick Allen Jarvis. She transitioned peacefully from this life to the next in the company of family on Friday, September 13, 2019. She was 85 years old.

Barbara was the loving wife to the late Roscoe D. Berry, Jr. who passed away in 2007.

She grew up in Philadelphia and attended Allison Elementary, Gillespie Junior High School, and graduated from the Philadelphia High School for Girls in 1951.

Barbara met and married Robert H. Clegg Jr. in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This joyful union was blessed with three beautiful and spirited daughters, Barbara Ruth, Robin Rene, and Sandra Evelyn. After this union ended, she married Thomas Cole and was blessed with two sons, Thomas Jr., and Fredric William. The growth in Philadelphia gave rise to the family’s decision to move to California in 1972. When Barbara and Thomas parted ways, she met Roscoe Berry and they were married in 1988.

Her professional endeavors spanned retail to investment (International Gem Investors) and ultimately—with a career change at age 50—became a licensed insurance agent, operating her own business.

She would say of all her accomplishments, her primary goal was to raise “good, caring” people—and she did.

Barbara is survived by her five loving children, Barbara R. Elam, Robin R. Ruiz and her husband Gilbert, Sandra E. Singletary and her husband Leon, Thomas Cole Jr., and Fredric W. Cole; seven grandchildren, Michael J. Cartwright and his wife Paula, George T. Elam IV and his wife Lily, Angella E. Wilson and her husband Duane, Leon J. Singletary III and his husband Nathan, Brandon M. Singletary, Jared C. Singletary, and Sakina Cole; and six great-grandchildren, Devon M. Cartwright, Tori E. Cartwright, Jameson R. Wilson, Samantha A. Wilson., George W. Elam, and Thaddeus E. Elam.

She will be fondly remembered by many family and friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to Barbara’s Life Celebration on Tuesday, October 1 with a visitation at Rose Hills Memorial Chapel (3888 Workman Mill Rd. Whittier, California 90601) from 9:00-11:00am, followed by a funeral service in the Memorial Chapel from 11:00am-12:00pm with a burial immediately following. A reception will be held at Villa Tepeyac’s Hacienda Room (2200 E Garvey Avenue S., West Covina, CA 91791) from 2:00-4:00pm.
