Dear friends,

We are gathered today to say farewell to Mrs Phoebe Chih, a mother, a friend and colleague.  

Mrs Phoebe Chih embodied in her lifespan of nearly hundred years, the dramatic turnabouts in the history of the Chinese people. Before she was ten, she experienced the Japanese massacre of Nanjing, and in her late teens she was leaving with one of the last planes from Nanjing to a new future in Taiwan. Here she found a new meaning for her life in her belief in Christ Jesus as a saviour for all of us. A few years later she left Taiwan together with her husband for Hong Kong to serve in the tiny fishing village of Lau Fau Shan. Many years later she moved with her family to Los Angeles. Here a long life’s journey came to an end. 
For all those years since she left Nanjing until the end of her days, she was a faithful
servant to the Lord. 

We, who are left behind, give thanks for what she meant to so many of us.
May she rest in peace!

Dear Mrs. Phoebe Chih,

We have so many good memories from the time, in the 1980’s, we were working together in Wing Jan Church, Lau Fau Shan and also being together as friends. As newcomers to Hong Kong from Norway, our  first coworkers in the ministry were Minister Ching Phoebe Chih-Hsing and husband Rev Chih. The way they received us and included us, was so nice! Just like being members of their family. They included us also during the celebation of the Chinese new year. «You are part of our family», they said. We are so grateful for their hospitality, kindness and love.  All the good things they shared with us, we will remember. This includes also the way they loved and served the people of Lau Fau Shan. Through preaching the Gospel, diaconial work and school and Kindergarten, they were a blessing to many people. 

Blessed be the good memories of Ching Phoebe Chih-Hsing 💐. Joigin - we will see again in Heaven….

I will always cherish the memory of visiting your home back in secondary school, especially when I was invited to pick a prayer card from the stack and we all prayed together before dinner. Your parents' warmth and kindness made me feel so welcome. Sending you all my love and strength.

When we arrived Hong Kong in September1974 Phoebe and Philip Chih immediately became our close and faithful friends. As our family grew from three to six (1974-1978) Phoebe and Philip gave Chinese names to our children and included them into their love, compassion and care. So our children cherished visits to the Chih family household at Lau Fau Shan as much as us parents. 
In short, Phoebe and Philip, Samuel and Gloria became our extended family in Hong Kong during the years we were separated from our family in Norway. At every Chinese cultural or Christian festival we were invited to rich and delcicious home cocked meals which Phoebe prepared for us. All six of us looked forward to these visits in the Chih household with great anticipation. But not only we, All Norwegian missionary colleagues and households received similar invitations, whether they were able to come or not. We are forever thankful for the love and care which Phoebe Ching Chih-Hsing faithfully showered on our family during our live in Hong Kong. 
We shall always remember Phoebe the Lord's Minister Phoebe with great thankfulness to God in our hearts - the Lord whom she served so faithfully throughout her life. .

Dear Gloria, Samuel and family,

We stand together with you in sadness and sorrow. We remember your mother Phoebe Chih as a vivacious, hospitable person who made everybody feel well in her presence. We will especially remember all the good and traditional dishes she spent days to prepare for us at Chinese New Year. Daughter Anna can visualise lots of food on big serving plates, the smell of sweets and of firecrackers at midnight. This brings back warm childhood memories she now treasures.
The first time I heard my son Tomas speak Cantonese, was at Chinese New Year 1982 when we watched the fireworks light up the harbour of Hong Kong. He called out: "Chih si mouh, Chih si mouh, tai ha, hou leenga!" He was only two years old and he dared to speak to her because she saw him and listened to him.
When I came to L.A. in 1997 I was received like a daughter in your home, later brougt to a Chinese restaurant on the 4th of July, and before I knew about it, she had ordered lots of delicious Chinese food which I ha not tasted for ages. In addition to that she was a good preacher and educator. We all miss her deeply.

雖然離別令人深感哀痛，但妳的愛與信仰必永遠存留在我們心中。深信妳和植牧師已在主懷中得享永恆的安息。
願主的愛與平安在這段艱難的時刻安慰並扶持妳的家人、願主恩常伴。

深刻記得小時候，每次去流浮山，植牧師和師母總是熱情地擁抱我和弟弟，每次都會為我們準備許多美食。當我們在幼稚園與教會之間奔跑玩耍時，植師母總會在自家門口看顧着我們幾個小朋友，大聲叮囑我們要小心。非常懷念植師母禱告中的力量，她總能記住每個人的需要，真的很細心。如今她已與植牧師團聚，日後天家再見！
