Was born in Brooklyn, NY on Feb. 9, 1931, and passed peacefully in his sleep on Oct. 10, 2011 (Fullerton, CA) after a 16-month battle with leukemia. Flip was diagnosed in June 2010 and given less than 2 months to live, and through the loving dedication of his wife, Betty Gill, and continued family support, he beat the odds. The 16 months we were able to spend with him will be forever cherished. Flip’s goal after the diagnosis was to make to his 80th birthday in his home with his family and beloved cats. His dream came true… and then some.
Being the gambling man that he was, maybe he “made a deal” with the good Lord in the timing of his passing.
He passed on the 10th day of the 10th month of 11th year - 10+11 = a perfect hand of Blackjack! And even more coincidental… at 7PM--(7 / 11) = 2 winning throws on the crap table.
Flip loved his family even more than fishing, hot rods, gambling and his martinis. He will be missed by his forever dedicated wife of 59 years, Betty Gill; children, Scott Gill (Jennifer), Sherri Smart (Steve); 3 beautiful grandchildren, Jessica Swagerty (Ryan), Madison Dean, Sophia Gill; brother, Leo Saporito (Lynn); sister, Marilyn Riggi (Sam); and his cat, Flower.
Friends & family are invited to his memorial service on Sat. 10/29 at 11:00AM at Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier CA. (Hillside Chapel). Reception immediately following service.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hospice of Presbyterian in memory of Phillip Gill. 15050 Imperial Hwy, La Mirada, CA 90638. Our family is grateful beyond words for the support and caring of our Hospice team. Our Hospice team was amazing, just unbelievable. May God bless them all.
