Yan Oi Lau was born on March 13, 1944 in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China to Waiman Wong (father) and Suk Fong Wong (mother). When she was a teenager she moved to Hong Kong where she attended high school. At the age of 25, she moved to Los Angeles from Hong Kong. She has 3 children, Katie (51), Sean (50), and Henry (47).
With her children she shared her love of cooking, meeting up for the occasional lunch/ dinner, traveling (many summers spent in Yosemite, CA), family holidays and birthdays (Chinese New Year, Thanksgiving and Christmas), and Mahjong with her church friends and her family. Dim sum in the San Gabriel Valley was her favorite. She also loved watching her Chinese soap operas and Chinese cooking shows. In the 1990s Yan found her passion in her Chinese Christian church in Granada Hills, CA (Community Christian Alliance Church), and would go to every Sunday service and many church outings.
To know Yan was to know how kind, positive, and loving she was. Her smile would light up a room. She would always talk about her children and grandchildren, and how proud she was of their accomplishments. Yan passed away on July 3rd, 2024 after a 10 year battle with cancer. She was surrounded by many family and loved ones until her final day. She will truly be missed by many family and friends, especially her 3 children and 3 grandchildren who love her very much.
