I grew up in a time when the neighborhood was a community and Vivian was a cornerstone within that community.  This meant that when our parents were not around they were our parents, looking after us, protecting us and disciplining us when needed.

Vivian spent many of her days watching me when I was a kid, watching after my kids when I was older, and would have watched over my grandkids today now that I'm just old.

I didn't realize that this was something  unique then and practically impossible today.  I think all the young ones  who lived on Kemp Avenue then miss her badly  today.  And, not only miss her but the end of a time when people were accountable to others and supported each other.  A time when neighbors watched out for us and our loved ones and  without reservation.

Vivian you are gone but not forgotten.

I am so fortunate to have known Mrs. Smith and the Smith family. When I had decided to leave the private sector and go into education, Mrs. Smith would graciously allow me to “sub” in her classroom. Because of her classroom management, working with her students was always a pleasure! She was a wonderful individual and I will always remember the support she gave to me as a new teacher.

Rest well, Aunt Vivian!  I’ll treasure our trips to Las Vegas with my Mom  and Aunt Bette.

I am incredibly blessed to have had a second Mom  in my life to provide an example of womanhood. & motherhood.  My heart is full of joy and fond memories of growing up and being raised by a woman of strength,  faith, patience and love.   I will be forever grateful that God put Vivian  Richardson Smith in my life as part of my village.   Thank you for always giving of yourself and loving unconditionally.   Your words of wisdom have always stayed with me as I raised a family of my own.    You will be dearly missed but forever in our hearts.     Your daughter by love,  Beverly

I'm truly sorry for your loss. She was a very beautiful person that lit up every place she walked. She was my  favorite school mom that God decided to his special classroom. I love you and will see you again. This time in you special class room.
