I heard the heartbreaking news that my good friend from Los Angeles, Thomas ‘DJ Gargamel’ Mayfield, has passed away, after seeing a post on a mutual friend’s Facebook with details of the funeral. Had I known earlier, I would have flown over from the UK and done everything I could to be there.

Thomas was a true champion of the music he loved and an important figure in the LA music scene. He had a deep passion for the culture, and I know how much he cared for my label, Suburban Base Records. Whenever we talked music, his energy shifted — it was like a light switched on, and his passion came pouring out.

But beyond his love for music, Thomas was one of the most supportive and uplifting people I’ve known. He always spoke about others with positivity and warmth, and I’m grateful for the genuine friendship he gave me while I was living in Los Angeles. He never let me feel alone — inviting me to his legendary Thanksgiving dinners, checking in during the COVID lockdowns, and even meeting up for dog walks just to make sure we were both doing okay. He later came to visit me in London after I’d returned to the UK.

Thomas was the very definition of a true friend — someone who gave without expecting anything in return. I am truly heartbroken. While the LA music scene has lost one of its most passionate champions, I feel I’ve lost someone who was like family. You’ll always be in my heart, Thomas. 💔

Let’s celebrate the life of a passionate champion of music and an irreplaceable part of our music community.

I met him when he was 15 yrs old via our DJ contest. He was amazing then and it was great to watch him grow up via the art of DJing. 
He called me one of his “House Music Tios” a true honor he bestowed on me. 
His smile, his love for mixing music and straight up passion and heart I will never forget.

I remember Gargamel as a youngster always popping up at every event with his video camera waving it in people’s faces asking for a shout out haha. I never would have thought that we would meet again later in life as adults and remember all the times seeing each other at events. I still have the VHS tape that he gave me with J5 performing at Beat Non Stop and of course it has Gargamel asking J5 to give a shout out to the camera. Hahaha Rest Easy Brother you are with Great Company I won’t ever forget all the good times.

From the days when you were at the Vestax Hollywood service center to hanging out at the most recent NAMM show always great times with you! You will be missed by the LA and global DJ community. Since day one you showed me alot of your character we had dinner with mark luv and others from over gold the day we met. To me that shows alot of character breaking bread with someone moving forward to years later you having me curate an event because you trusted my music judgement it meant a lot being that it was coming from you. I never really said it but thank you Thomas sorry I never said it enough. You will be dearly missed.

I'm not in this picture. Gargamel (he's always been Gargy to Me) text me this. It's comedians Deon Cole and Corey Holcomd. They are my friends from Chicago. Deon also moonlights as a DJ and Gargy had him spinning at his club that night in Downtown L.A.
 I moved to L.A. from Chicago in 1997. I knew Gargamel even before then, through a childhood friend the infamous world known DJ Ron Trent.  When I moved to L.A. years later I had to hook-up  with my boy because he's like family. 
 Who knew we'd hook up and have a podcast back in 2020 when the world shut down for a couple years. Gargy made the Pandemic so much better for me by inviting me to his studio in Whittier, CA. I would be smiling ear-ear flooring it on the freeway eagerly counting down the minutes to get ready to interview a host of great people from all walks of life. Whether they were famous or on their way to being famous or simply just rich in spirit, I knew Gargy and I would laugh, talk crap about one another and laugh some more. We had a blast! I actually felt guilty about 2020 because so many people were affected and here I am having the time of my life. 
 I will miss him deeply. He has been a consistent thing in my life. We could go without seeing each other a couple years and see each other and wouldn't miss a beat. I love that dude. We used to say "Your my Boy for Life!" Now I'll say "Your my boy for life and after life!" Until we meet again my friend. 
Mama Nancy, I know your heart is heavy. I'm so sorry you have to go thru this. Condolences to your family as well. We're all here to talk anytime. He left a village of people who loved him.

My memory of Thomas is when we used to take him to raider games when he was a little dude . later to find out he was a best friends with my stepson Mike that speaks Valium for those two to be friends! I was deeply saddened to hear the news of DJ Gargamel's passing. He was not only a remarkable DJ from the legendary L.A. scene of the '90s, but also one of my closest friends. His love for music was infectious, and it truly shone through in his travels around the world, where he made friends wherever he went. 

DJ Gargamel generously opened his studio in Whittier, CA, welcoming fellow DJs to share their passion and perform their sets. He had an incredibly big heart and treated everyone he encountered with kindness and respect. I will always cherish the way he embraced me and honored those who paved the way for the vibrant L.A. music scene.

Words cannot fully express the magnitude of this loss. Thank you, my brother, for the incredible friendship and love you always shared with me. You will be deeply missed. Rest in peace, DJ Gargamel. 🙏

Tommyboy!!! I’m gonna miss u sooooo much!!! Every time I touch the decks u will be remembered.. thanks for everything u taught me, whether it was about DJing or life.. I appreciate all the talks, partying, hanging out and of course all the dumb shit we did lol.. I will always cherish your friendship and the time we got to be friends on this planet.. Thomas (or how I liked to call you Garg),

Thank you for always being genuine and a true friend.  I really appreciate you for never judging and  accepting me for who I am. I knew that i could send you any memes that i thought were  funny as we shared the same dark humor (hehe). I'm going to miss the funny memes you sent me and me responding to them. Thank you for ensuring those late nights that me and my sister made it home  as you would   take us home after a late..  late Norms run ( if you know you know). I tried supporting you as much as I could by going to see you spin.   You will be greatly missed GARG. Your friend Ivan or as you would call me Big Pimp!!

Our condolences to you and your family. I am so sorry for your loss cousin 🙏. May God give you the strength to get through the sorrow and pain of a loss of your son.
