Cherished wife, mother, and grandmother Susan Shu-Zeng Chu Tsai (蔡朱淑禎)passed away on December 18, 2024 in Newport Beach, California from long-term complications due to a fall. Born in Hsinchu, Taiwan to Tang-Mei Peng and Yu-Cheng Chu, Susan had two beloved elder brothers, the late John Yi-Kai Ju and James Wen-Muh Chu. She earned her R.N. from Provincial Taipei Nursing College.
Susan emigrated with her husband Dr. Edward Ming-Kang Tsai and baby daughter Jean to Paterson, New Jersey in 1971 where Dr. Tsai completed a second residency and her son Edward was born, before settling in Indiana, Pennsylvania for 28 years, then moving to Yorba Linda, California upon Dr. Tsai’s retirement.
Susan maintained the books in Edward’s medical practice. She accompanied her husband, family and friends on many international and domestic trips, eventually visiting all seven continents. She most enjoyed being a homebody where she could work on home projects and serve as an indefatigable source of advice to her children. She was an active member of the Tustin Taiwanese Presbyterian Church.
A force of nature in her family, Susan and Edward were married on her birthday, 55 years ago. She survived brain cancer in 1980. In 2017 she fell during a trip to Bulgaria and never recovered.
Susan is survived by her devoted husband Edward Ming-Kang, daughter Jean (Mark Rosenblatt) of Chicago, IL, son Edward (Abbie Wang) of Las Vegas, NV, and grandchildren Andrew and Zoey Tsai and Élodie Rosenblatt. She is also survived by her brother James Wen-Muh as well as cousins, nephews and nieces in both the U.S. and Taiwan.
A funeral service was held at Rose Hills Memorial Park in SkyRose Chapel, in Whittier, California, on January 11, 2025.
