Ruth Kathleen Deering passed away on March 18th, 2025. Born in Turlock, California, July 22, 1926, to Gail Bernice Jaderberg and Arthur Wesley Carter. Around 1928, the family, including older brother, Jay, moved south to Bloomington just north of Riverside, California. Eventually the growing family moved to Beaumont, California. Here in this small town during the Great Depression, Ruth grew up with her eight siblings. The large house resembled a small farm with the gardens, chickens, pigs, and the occasional cow. She would help with animals, can fruit and vegetables, sew, and cook for her younger siblings. Ruth completed her formative years, graduating from Beaumont High School in June 1944.
Soon after, she left for Los Angeles to enter the Diploma Nursing program of Los Angeles County General Hospital for a unique 36-month program known as the United States Cadet Nurses. The program was designed to train young students to become RNs to support World War II efforts; however, the war ended in 1945, so once she graduated in 1947 she went to work at UCLA Operating Rooms.
Ruth continued to work and live in Los Angeles. One night, at a dance, she met her future husband, Mathys Johannes Deering, a foreigner from Rotterdam, Netherlands. After a brief courtship of three months, they were married in the Old Rock Church in Beaumont, October 1st, 1952. They settled in Long Beach and soon the first of four children was born in August 1953. They purchased a home in February 1955 which Ruth would live in until her death. In this home they raised four children and instilled in them love for their country by traveling throughout the United States on many camping adventures. She encouraged good well-being with education, swimming, music lessons and many family outings. She was also a Girl Scout troop leader and a county music enthusiast.
While nurturing her young family, Ruth took an RN refresher course in 1968 and returned to work at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. While working on the 4th floor, she found her next nursing passion, Orthopedic Nursing. She would mentor many young nurses who fondly called her "Mom" and "A-1 IV starter". Many of them belonged to the National Association of Orthopedic Nursing (NAON), and in 1984 she became the NAON Orthopedic Nurse of the Year. During her career, she also went to LBCC to earn her Degree of Associate in Arts, June 14, 1974.
Even though she enjoyed her second career in nursing, she soon joined her husband in the golden retirement years. They would take their Alpha trailer and camp in many sites including Death Valley, Pismo Beach, Quartzsite and others. They took Matt's sister and husband from Holland across United States as well. Often, they would be gone for a month at a time as Matt wanted to do full-time camping. Death Valley was a very special place as the family camped there during the "49ner Days". This is where the love of country music grew even more and many good friends were made.
Unfortunately, she was widowed too soon on February 18, 1996. After much grief, she continued onward pulling their trailer to various areas of California. Later purchased a motor-home which she drove until the sprite age of 91.
She is survived by two Siblings, Arthur and Francis, all of her four children, Elizabeth, Jacqueline, Marilyn and Mark, 10 grandchildren, and, so far, 8 great grandchildren.
