His Chinese name is Quan Hong Fong. He was born on January 23, 1924 and passed away peacefully at home on April 11, 2024, at 100 years of age.
Hungie was born to Quan Sun Hong and Jung So in the home of his father's brother, Quan Bok Mun, known as Daniel Quan Hall, at 132 North Main Street in Los Angeles. Hungie lived there until February 1927 when he accompanied his mother to China following the death of his father. In June of 1933, Hungie, returned to the States alone and moved back into the Hall house. He later attended Lincoln High School in Los Angeles where he lettered in football.
In 1942, Hungie lived in Van Nuys, California and worked on an asparagus farm. He returned to the Hall house in 1945. He would ultimately join his Uncle and other Kow Kong relatives who originated from Guangdong, Nom Hoi, China, to become one of the many special butchers who started and operated the wholesale and retail meat business known as United Meat Market in Los Angeles' Chinatown.
In September of 1947, Hungie left for Hong Kong where he met and married Luk Chuk Fung. In May of 1948 they came to Los Angeles and lived with the Hall family, this time on Yale Street, before moving into their own apartment two doors down. They had two children, Elaine and Albert; but sadly, Luk Chuk would pass away in 1951.
In August of 1953, Hungie returned to Hong Kong where he met and married Wai Chun Chu. They arrived in the States in April of 1954 and lived next to the Hall family on Yale Street. Lorraine was born in 1955, In January of 1961 Hungie and his family moved to their new home in El Sereno. Finally ending the many years of living with or next to the Hall family, but always keeping them close to his heart. The family continued to grow with the births of Alan, Kenny and Jeanne.
Hungie retired in 1989 when United Meat Market was closed. He then started the next chapter of his life traveling and enjoying the company of many of his close friends and relatives and making new friends.
Hungie is survived by his wife Wai Chun Quan, his daughter Elaine Miyagi (Donald), son Albert Quan (Marilyn), grandchildren Michelle, Kevin and Bryan Quan, daughter Lorraine Quan, son Kenneth Quan (Sharon) and daughter Jeanne Quan.
