Mike was born on January 22, 1936 to Mike and Rose Melnick in Brandon, Manitoba. He enjoyed growing up in his small town with a close circle of friends and started his career as an accountant, eventually working at The Brandon Sun newspaper.
As a teen, Mike met Isla at the local roller-skating rink, asked if he could walk her home, and so began their love story. Mike & Isla wed in 1957 and went on to have two children, Tracy & (Michael) Patrick.
In 1966, a job offer with a community newspaper moved the family to Southern California and they settled in Lakewood, where they met neighbors who became like a second family and continue to be lifelong friends. The “Yanks” as their Canadian family referred to them, enjoyed frequent road trips, traveling around the States on their way to visit family and friends in Canada. After a few years, Mike left the newspaper to work for Warren Trucking, eventually becoming their Chief Financial Officer.
Mike was known for his easy-going manner, his quick smile, and the twinkle in his beautiful hazel eyes. He was an avid golfer and was happiest when he was on the golf course with his buddies, with Isla, and eventually Patrick. He spent many years serving as a Board Member with his local country club. Mike loved his lefty golf clubs, his Tilly hats, The Dodgers, Sinatra, country music, and beer. Affectionately known as Big Mike, he loved to have a good time, we will always think of him when we hear the song “Celebrate”.
As Mike’s mind and body began to fail, his spirit remained positive and loving. He didn’t complain, he didn’t get angry. He lived one day at a time and taught us all what it means to love unconditionally. Mike was well-cared for in his home; Patrick and his wife Susan were exceptional caregivers throughout his illness.
Michael is predeceased by his parents Mike and Rose, and his beloved wife Isla Mae. Mike’s memory will continue to be cherished by daughter Tracy, son-in-law John, and granddaughter Sophie Fiscella of Valencia CA; by son Patrick and daughter-in-law Susan Melnick of Lakewood, CA; his brother David and sister-in-law Dorothy Melnick of British Columbia, and by his nieces and nephews and the close friends who were like family to him.
A graveside service will take place on Wednesday, June 15th at 11am at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, followed by a celebration of life reception at Maggie’s Pub in Santa Fe Springs.
