Marilee graduated from Mark Keppel High School in 1952, where she was an active member of the debate club. She continued her education at Occidental College, graduating in 1956 with a degree in sociology. In 1957, she married Richard Buchany, and together they raised two daughters.
In 1966, Marilee earned her teaching credential and began her career as a substitute teacher. Her passion for education led her to pursue a master’s degree of arts in special education from Cal Stata LA in 1974. Marilee was committed to helping her students discover creative ways to learn and took immense joy in crafting unique and meaningful experiences for them.
After retiring from teaching, Marilee joined Delta Kappa Gamma (International society for key women educators) and continued to share her love for education. Marilee embraced her artistic side. She was rarely without her knitting bag, creating beautiful pieces wherever she went. Later, she discovered a love for jewelry making, incorporating her fondness for holiday decorations into her designs. Her creativity and curiosity were evident in every new venture she pursued.
Marilee also had a deep love for animals and enjoyed traveling and camping with her family. She and her husband explored the country with their dogs by their side, creating cherished memories along the way. Marilee had a special relationship with her older brother Richard who provided her with useful bits of knowledge a younger sister needed. Richard and his wife Mary joined in camping trips and introduced Marilee to new and educational trips with Road Scholar.
Her daughters, Sharon Zeigler, and Sue Buchany survived Marilee. Family and friends will deeply miss her warmth, creativity, and adventurous spirit.
